Post No. 3,226 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 18144.07 up 24.29 or 0.13% from Monday's close of 18119.17. Of the 30 Dow components 16 gained and 14 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up $2.49 or 2.07%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was DuPont down $1.49 or 2.13%.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 17.30 up from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 17.20 (last year it was 16.57). Tuesday's P/E estimate is 16.17 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 16.17 (year ago it was 15.19) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.52 down from Monday's dividend yield of 2.54 (last year it was 2.16). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2719.05 up 3.64 from Monday's average numerator of 2715.41. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.64 up 13 cents from Monday's closing average of $90.51. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.76 (XOM/CAT) down 1 cent from Monday's median closing price of $86.77 (XOM/CAT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $362 ($271,905 - $271,541).
6/23/15 Tues. 4:31 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says
U.S. stocks ended Tuesday’s choppy session slightly higher,
though modest gains were enough to push the Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000
to record closing levels. Modest gains on Wall Street followed rallies in global
equity markets which were boosted by optimism about a possible solution to
Greece’s debt woes. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.12% gained 6.12 points, or 0.1% to
5,160.09, closing at a record for the second consecutive session. The Russell
2000 RUT, +0.26% gained 3.37 points, or 0.3%, to
1,295.76, its all-time high. The main benchmark S&P 500 SPX, +0.06% eked out a gain of 1.41 points,
or 0.1%, to settle at 2,124.27. Gains in five sectors were matched by losses in
the other five sectors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.13% added 24.76 points, or 0.1%,
to end at 18,144.54.Kristina Hooper, U.S. investment strategist at Allianz
Global Investors, noted the stock market gains in June, are so far defying
seasonality.“Usually, June is a weak month for stocks, but not this
year, it appears. We would attribute that to improving economic indicators in
the second quarter and the fact that the Federal Reserve will be slow and
measured in normalizing interest rates,” Hooper said.Eric Wiegand, senior portfolio manager at the Private Client
Reserve at U.S. Bank, said the sideways move in the market over the past
several months is reflective of rotation between sectors.“There’s been a lot of churn out of sectors that will suffer
from rising rates, such as utilities and consumer staples. On the other side,
financials have outperformed. But the aggregate result is that we haven’t moved
much,” Wiegand said, referring to the performance of the S&P 500
year-to-date.Recent housing data, meanwhile, was encouraging, Wiegand
said.“Economists had written off housing, but it’s coming back
and shows consumers are doing better. Housing also has a multiplier effect on
the economy,” he said.Broad upward momentum in early trade was driven by data on
sales of new single-family homes, which showed that new
homes in May were sold at an annual rate of 546,000, hitting the fastest pace
since February 2008. The figures showed growth in two out of four regions,
while April numbers were also raised. The home-sales data came after of a report showed that orders for durable U.S. goods fell a seasonally
adjusted 1.8% in May, mostly due to weaker demand for commercial aircraft, the
government said Tuesday. Economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast a 1.5%
decline. Fed speakers:
Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell said there
could be two interest-rate hikes this year as he said the stock market isn’t
showing signs of being in a bubble, during a breakfast conversation sponsored
by The Wall Street Journal. Green Dot Corp.
GDOT, +40.56% soared 41% on news that its
contract to manage and issue Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s WMT, -0.30% MoneyCard debit cards was
extended for another five years. Separately, Green Dot announced a $150
stock-repurchase program.Fitbit Inc.
FIT, -0.53% rose 2%, extending gains into
its fourth day of trading. The share price has nearly doubled from its $20 IPO
price. Trading began last Thursday. Other markets:
Optimism for a deal between Greece and its lenders boosted European markets on
Tuesday, with the Stoxx Europe 600 index SXXP, +1.16% rallying more than 1%. Asian stock markets closed mostly higher, with China’s
Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, +2.19% erasing a sharp loss to end
2.2 % higher.
10-year Treasury yields ticked higher, up 4 basis
points to 2.41 %, while the ICE dollar index DXY, +1.12% rose 1% to 95.355 after durable
goods data.Crude oil futures CLQ5, +1.28% settled higher, rising 1% to
$61.01 a barrel. Gold futures GCQ5, -0.55% fell 0.6% to settle at
$1,176.00 an ounce.

The following are excerpts from Tuesday morning's Blog:
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 18119.7 up 103.83 or 0.58% from Friday's close of 18014.28. For the year the Dow is up 1.66%. Of the 30 Dow components 4 gained and 26 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs up $3.32 or 1.56%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise were Procter & Gamble & Cisco each down 9 cents and percentage-wise was Cisco down 0.31%.
Monday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2715.41 up 15.81 from Friday's average numerator of 2699.60.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.51 up 52 cents from Friday's closing average of $89.99. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.77 (XOM/CAT) up 41 cents from Friday's median closing price of $86.36 (XOM/CAT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,581 ($271,541 - $269,960).
6/22/15 Mon. 4:35 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says Small-cap index Russell 2000 and the Nasdaq Composite led the gains on Wall Street Monday, ending the session at record levels. The main benchmarks posted moderate gains, as headline news on Greece and potential agreement between its lenders to avert a default spurred a global equity rally. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.72% 36.97 points, or 0.7% to 5,153.97, the highest level ever. Biotechnology stocks led the gains. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF IBB, +1.50% rose 1.5%.The Russell 2000 RUT, +0.60% gained 6.78 points, or 0.5%, to 1,292.32. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.61% closed 12.86 points, or 0.6%, higher at 2,122.85, only several points below its all-time high reached last month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.58% gained 103.83 points, or 0.6%, to 18,119.78, with 26 of its 30 of its members finishing higher.Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, said it is encouraging to see markets follow through with gains after solid advance last week.“It appears that the market is driven by headline news and in the absence of economic news or earnings releases, investors react to news from Greece,” Cieszynski said.“The big question is whether indexes will break out of the range and move higher,” he said.Greek hopes: The Greek government pitched a last-ditch reform package to its creditors on Sunday. Eurozone finance ministers, meeting in Brussels, hailed the proposal as a step forward. Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who chairs meetings of the Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers, said the proposal could be the basis for a deal later this week. Greece’s Athex Composite Index GD, +9.00% jumped 9% to 749.17 on the deal hopes. The Global X FTSE Greece 20 ETF GREK, +8.29% added 8.5%. Some analysts, however, expect Greece to exit the euro. Sharon Stark, market strategist at D.A. Davidson, said in emailed comments: “We continue to anticipate a Grexit, albeit at a measured pace beginning with a default on the debt, haircuts on collateral pledged as part of the Emergency Loan Assistance program, and eventually capital controls to stem the outflow of funds from Greece. This event may then force Greece to exit the Eurozone, but not the EU, and revert to the drachma and begin the painful process of rebuilding the country.”U.S. data: In an encouraging sign for the housing market, sales of existing homes rose in May, hitting fastest pace since November 2009 and rebounding from a drop in April. Movers and shakers: Shares of Williams Cos. WMB, +25.90% surged 28% after the natural-gas pipeline giant said Sunday it had rejected an unsolicited buyout offer worth $48 billion, but didn't specify who had made the bid. On Monday, Energy Transfer Equity L.P. ETE, -4.87% said it was bidding $53.1 billion for Williams.Cigna Corp. CI, +4.73% jumped 6% after the board of health-care-services company on Sunday rejected a $47.5 billion takeover offer from Anthem Inc. ANTM, +3.62% Anthem shares rose 3.6%, while rival Aetna Inc. AET, +3.21% gained 3.2%.Fitbit Inc. FIT, +1.75% soared 14%, extending gains on its third day of trading, after jumping more than 50% on its debut Thursday. Other markets: The dollar index inched higher, while investors dumped government bonds. The yield on a 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to prices rose 11 basis points to 2.37%. Crude oil CLN5, +0.67% was little-changed, hovering around $60 a barrel, while gold futures GCN5, -1.40% sold off, dropping to $1,184.70 an ounce. Asian markets moved solidly higher. China’s mainland market was closed for a holiday, after falling 13% last week in its worst weekly selloff since the financial crisis.
