Post No. 3,228 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 17966.07 down 178 or 0.98%  from Tuesday's close of 18144.07. Of the 30   Dow components  only Apple  gained and   29declined.  The  only and therefore biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Apple up $1.08 or 0.85%.  The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs and percentage-wise was DuPont down 3.36%.

As of the open of  the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's  Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Wednesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.42 down from Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio of  17.30 (last year it was 16.45).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 16.17 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 16.17 (year ago it was 15.19) and  Wednesday's dividend yield is  2.30 down from Tuesday's dividend yield of  2.52 (last year it was 2.18). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2692.38 down 27.33  from Tuesday's average numerator of 2719.05.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.75 down 89 cents  from Tuesday's closing average of $90.64.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.42 (XOM/CAT) down 34 cents  from Tuesday's median closing price of $86.76 (XOM/CAT).  The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Wednesday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,733  ($271,905 - $269,238).

6/24/15 Wed. 4:51 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova &  Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks ended lower on Wednesday after two consecutive sessions of gains, as Greece and its creditors made little progress in negotiating a debt deal which would avert a default. Selling on Wall Street began in early trade, but as it became clearer that an accord wouldn’t be reached Wednesday between Greece and its international creditors, the selloff intensified.Negotiations between Greece and its creditors made little progress. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.74%  fell 15.62 points, or 0.7%, to 2,122.41, with losses across the board. Materials led the losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.98%  dropped 178 points, or 1%, to 17,996.07. Excluding Apple Inc., all Dow components finished lower. Transportation stocks were hit hard on Wednesday, with the Dow Transport index DJT, -1.86% falling nearly 2%. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist at Wells Capital Management, noted that while Greece headlines are moving markets, the moves are less and less significant.“At this point, stock traders are watching the bond markets carefully, as changes in yields, which can happen rapidly, will affect stock prices,” he said. Government bonds rallied as investors sought safety of havens on Wednesday. 10-year Treasury yield TMUBMUSD10Y, -1.72% which moves inversely to prices dropped 3 basis point to 2.38%.Hopes that Greece and its creditors will reach a deal on Wednesday were dashed, as significant differences remained.U.S. data: The U.S. economy contracted by a revised 0.2 % in the first quarter, a smaller decline than previously reported that mainly reflects higher consumer spending and a lower drop in exports. Market reaction to data was mostly muted.Earnings: House builder Lennar Corp. LEN, +4.20%  reported fiscal second-quarter earnings of 79 cents a share, beating forecasts of 64 cents a share. Shares rose 4.2%. Monsanto Co. MON, -5.73%  shares fell 5.7% after the company’s revenue disappointed investors, even as profits topped estimates. General Motors Co. GM, -3.14%  fell 3.1% after Goldman Sachs cut the car maker to neutral from buy. The analysts said they’d rotated into Ford Motor Co. F, +1.37% which they upgraded to buy from neutral. Ford shares climbed 1.4%.
Other markets: Asian stock markets closed higher, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 index NIK, +0.28%  ending at a more-than-18-year high. The greenback rallied 1.6 % against the euro on Tuesday, its largest one-day gain since May 19, after a strong new-home sales report and hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell.Oil futures CLQ5, -0.08% dropped 1.2% to $60.27 a barrel, while gold futures GCQ5, +0.13%  settled lower for a fourth session in a row, down 0.3% at $1,172.90.

6/23/15 Tues. 4:31 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova &  Sara Sjolin says
U.S. stocks ended Tuesday’s choppy session slightly higher, though modest gains were enough to push the Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000 to record closing levels. Modest gains on Wall Street followed rallies in global equity markets which were boosted by optimism about a possible solution to Greece’s debt woes. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.12% gained 6.12 points, or 0.1% to 5,160.09, closing at a record for the second consecutive session. The Russell 2000 RUT, +0.26%  gained 3.37 points, or 0.3%, to 1,295.76, its all-time high. The main benchmark S&P 500 SPX, +0.06%  eked out a gain of 1.41 points, or 0.1%, to settle at 2,124.27. Gains in five sectors were matched by losses in the other five sectors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.13%  added 24.76 points, or 0.1%, to end at 18,144.54.Kristina Hooper, U.S. investment strategist at Allianz Global Investors, noted the stock market gains in June, are so far defying seasonality.“Usually, June is a weak month for stocks, but not this year, it appears. We would attribute that to improving economic indicators in the second quarter and the fact that the Federal Reserve will be slow and measured in normalizing interest rates,” Hooper said.Eric Wiegand, senior portfolio manager at the Private Client Reserve at U.S. Bank, said the sideways move in the market over the past several months is reflective of rotation between sectors.“There’s been a lot of churn out of sectors that will suffer from rising rates, such as utilities and consumer staples. On the other side, financials have outperformed. But the aggregate result is that we haven’t moved much,” Wiegand said, referring to the performance of the S&P 500 year-to-date.Recent housing data, meanwhile, was encouraging, Wiegand said.“Economists had written off housing, but it’s coming back and shows consumers are doing better. Housing also has a multiplier effect on the economy,” he said.Broad upward momentum in early trade was driven by data on sales of new single-family homes, which showed that new homes in May were sold at an annual rate of 546,000, hitting the fastest pace since February 2008. The figures showed growth in two out of four regions, while April numbers were also raised. The home-sales data came after of a report showed that orders for durable U.S. goods fell a seasonally adjusted 1.8% in May, mostly due to weaker demand for commercial aircraft, the government said Tuesday. Economists polled by MarketWatch had forecast a 1.5% decline. Fed speakers: Federal Reserve Governor Jerome Powell said there could be two interest-rate hikes this year as he said the stock market isn’t showing signs of being in a bubble, during a breakfast conversation sponsored by The Wall Street Journal. Green Dot Corp. GDOT, +40.56%  soared 41% on news that its contract to manage and issue Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s WMT, -0.30%  MoneyCard debit cards was extended for another five years. Separately, Green Dot announced a $150 stock-repurchase program.Fitbit Inc. FIT, -0.53%  rose 2%, extending gains into its fourth day of trading. The share price has nearly doubled from its $20 IPO price. Trading began last Thursday. Other markets: Optimism for a deal between Greece and its lenders boosted European markets on Tuesday, with the Stoxx Europe 600 index SXXP, +1.16%  rallying more than 1%. Asian stock markets closed mostly higher, with China’s Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, +2.19%  erasing a sharp loss to end 2.2 % higher.
10-year Treasury yields ticked higher, up 4 basis points to 2.41 %, while the ICE dollar index DXY, +1.12%  rose 1% to 95.355 after durable goods data.Crude oil futures CLQ5, +1.28%  settled higher, rising 1% to $61.01 a barrel. Gold futures GCQ5, -0.55%  fell 0.6% to settle at $1,176.00 an ounce.
