Post No. 3,224 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 18119.7 up 103.83 or 0.58% from Friday's close of 18014.28. Of the 30 Dow components 4 gained and 26 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Goldman Sachs up $3.32 or 1.56%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise were Procter & Gamble & Cisco each down 9 cents and percentage-wise was Cisco down 0.31%.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 17.20 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 17.30 (last year it was 16.58). Monday's P/E estimate is 16.17 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 16.12 (year ago it was 15.19) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.54 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.17). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2715.41 up 15.81 from Friday's average numerator of 2699.60. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.51 up 52 cents from Friday's closing average of $89.99. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.77 (XOM/CAT) up 41 cents from Friday's median closing price of $86.36 (XOM/CAT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,581 ($271,541 - $269,960).
6/22/15 Mon. 4:35 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says Small-cap index Russell 2000 and the Nasdaq Composite led the gains on Wall Street Monday, ending the session at record levels. The main benchmarks posted moderate gains, as headline news on Greece and potential agreement between its lenders to avert a default spurred a global equity rally. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.72% 36.97 points, or 0.7% to 5,153.97, the highest level ever. Biotechnology stocks led the gains. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF IBB, +1.50% rose 1.5%.The Russell 2000 RUT, +0.60% gained 6.78 points, or 0.5%, to 1,292.32. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.61% closed 12.86 points, or 0.6%, higher at 2,122.85, only several points below its all-time high reached last month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.58% gained 103.83 points, or 0.6%, to 18,119.78, with 26 of its 30 of its members finishing higher.Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, said it is encouraging to see markets follow through with gains after solid advance last week.“It appears that the market is driven by headline news and in the absence of economic news or earnings releases, investors react to news from Greece,” Cieszynski said.“The big question is whether indexes will break out of the range and move higher,” he said.Greek hopes: The Greek government pitched a last-ditch reform package to its creditors on Sunday. Eurozone finance ministers, meeting in Brussels, hailed the proposal as a step forward. Dutch Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, who chairs meetings of the Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers, said the proposal could be the basis for a deal later this week. Greece’s Athex Composite Index GD, +9.00% jumped 9% to 749.17 on the deal hopes. The Global X FTSE Greece 20 ETF GREK, +8.29% added 8.5%. Some analysts, however, expect Greece to exit the euro. Sharon Stark, market strategist at D.A. Davidson, said in emailed comments: “We continue to anticipate a Grexit, albeit at a measured pace beginning with a default on the debt, haircuts on collateral pledged as part of the Emergency Loan Assistance program, and eventually capital controls to stem the outflow of funds from Greece. This event may then force Greece to exit the Eurozone, but not the EU, and revert to the drachma and begin the painful process of rebuilding the country.”U.S. data: In an encouraging sign for the housing market, sales of existing homes rose in May, hitting fastest pace since November 2009 and rebounding from a drop in April.
Movers and shakers: Shares of Williams Cos. WMB, +25.90% surged 28% after the natural-gas pipeline giant said Sunday it had rejected an unsolicited buyout offer worth $48 billion, but didn't specify who had made the bid. On Monday, Energy Transfer Equity L.P. ETE, -4.87% said it was bidding $53.1 billion for Williams.Cigna Corp. CI, +4.73% jumped 6% after the board of health-care-services company on Sunday rejected a $47.5 billion takeover offer from Anthem Inc. ANTM, +3.62% Anthem shares rose 3.6%, while rival Aetna Inc. AET, +3.21% gained 3.2%.Fitbit Inc. FIT, +1.75% soared 14%, extending gains on its third day of trading, after jumping more than 50% on its debut Thursday. Other markets: The dollar index inched higher, while investors dumped government bonds. The yield on a 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to prices rose 11 basis points to 2.37%. Crude oil CLN5, +0.67% was little-changed, hovering around $60 a barrel, while gold futures GCN5, -1.40% sold off, dropping to $1,184.70 an ounce. Asian markets moved solidly higher. China’s mainland market was closed for a holiday, after falling 13% last week in its worst weekly selloff since the financial crisis.

The following are excerpts from Monday morning's Blog:
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 18014.28 down 101.56 or 0.56% from Thursday's close of 18115.84. For the week the Dow is up 115.44 or 0.64% from last Friday's close of 17,898.84. For the year the Dow is up 1.08%. Of the 30 Dow components 3 gained and 27 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot up 58 cents or 0.52%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was Travelers down $2.02 or 1.99%.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2699.60 down 15.22 from Thursday's average numerator of 2714.82.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.99 down 50 cents from Thursday's closing average of $90.49. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $86.36 (XOM/CAT) down 10 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $86.46 (XOM/CAT). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,522 ($271,482 - $269,960).
6/19/15 Fri. 4:42 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, Sara Sjolin & Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks ended Friday deep in the red Friday as the persistent deadlock in Greek debt talks turned investors cautious heading into the weekend. A so-called quadruple-witching day - when options and futures for stocks and stock indexes expire simultaneously, may have contributed to the late-session selloff on Friday, according to analysts. Rallies during the week, however, helped main indexes record weekly gains. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.53% finished down 11.25 points, or 0.5%, at 2,109.99, with all 10 of its main sectors closing lower. Utilities and financials lead losses. The main benchmark recorded a 0.8% gain over the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.55% dropped 101.56 points, or 0.6%, to 18,014.28, but posted a modest 0.6% gain over the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.31% ended down 15.95 points, or 0.3%, to 5,117.00, retreating from record highs set Thursday. The tech-heavy index clocked in a 1.3% gain over the week.Setting the stage for stocks Friday was the European Central Bank, which approved an emergency loan to Greece’s banking system nearly 24 hours after eurozone finance ministers failed to strike a deal with debt-laden Greece Thursday. Eurozone leaders will hold an emergency crisis summit Monday after finance leaders again failed to reach any kind of agreement between Greece and its creditors on Thursday. Channing Smith, portfolio manager at Capital Advisors, said the market rally over the past few days has been perplexing.“Big moves on Thursday were attributed to the Fed, however, the Fed has not changed its stance. And the fact markets are at these levels despite the complete failure to find a resolution to Greece’s debt problems, is baffling,” Smith said.“One of the suggestions is that the market expects more liquidity from central banks because of Greek problems. Though, today’s slight retreat is probably immaterial, but we will be watching if there is a selloff later in the afternoon,” Smith said.Stocks to watch: ConAgra Foods, Inc. CAG, +10.86% shares surged 11% after Jana Partners LLC on Thursday disclosed a nearly 7.2% stake in the company and said it intends to use its influence to change the board of directors. FitBit Inc. FIT, +9.50% shares jumped 9.5% on its second trading day, on top of 51% gain on Thursday.Other markets: The Stoxx Europe 600 index SXXP, +0.36% closed slightly higher. The Shanghai Composite Index SHCOMP, -6.42% on Friday logged its worst week in more than seven years, as it fell into correction territory. The index closed down more than 6% as investors got spooked by selling that hit highflying Chinese startups this week. Elsewhere, markets gained, with a nearly 1% rise for the Nikkei 225 index NIK, +0.92%
U.S. Treasuries rallied, sending the yield on the 10-year note, which moves inversely to prices, 7 basis points to 2.26%. The drop in yield suggests general nervousness among investors. Oil prices CLN5, -1.59% slumped 1.4% to settle at $59.61 a barrel and declined slightly over the week. Gold prices GCQ5, -0.17% settled 10 cents lower at $1,201.90 an ounce.
