The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 11,428.46 up 18.24 points or 0.16% from Friday's close of 11,410.32. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 15 gained and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $91.63 +1.69 1.88% 6,575,755 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $41.65 -0.97 2.28% 25,788,253 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.55 up from Friday's P/E of 14.50 (year ago it was 18.17); the P/E estimate is 13.34 up from Friday's 13.33 (year ago it was 16.19) and the dividend yield is 2.51 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.65 (last year it was 2.67). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,510.05 up 2.41 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,507.64. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.33 up $0.08 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $50.25. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.02 (HPQ/AXP) down 0.22 from Friday's closing median price of $44.44. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $78.15 -0.25 0.32% 3,684,718 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.54 -0.26 2.03% 185,078,256 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $241 ($151,005 - $150,764)

MarketWatch Friday 12/10/10 4:20 pm by Nick Godt says US stocks finished at a two-year high on Friday, and also gained for the week, helped by mostly upbeat economic data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,410, +40.26, +0.35%) rose 40.26 points, or 0.4%, to end at 11,410.32, lifted by a 3.4% gain in shares of General Electric (GE 17.75, +0.03, +0.17%) . For the week, the Dow rose 0.3%. The broad S&P 500 (SPX 1,240, +7.40, +0.60%) gained 7.40 points, or 0.6%, at 1,240.40, a two-year high. It gained 1.3% for the week.
