WSJ pC5 "Dow falls 19.90, breather after 3 day rally" by Kristina Peterson says US blue chip stocks edged lower on as investors sobered by Red Res Chair Bernanke's tepid economic outlook paused after last week's climb. Fin'l stocks declined after Nomura said that one or more US credit rating firms could downgrade some large US banks with Bank of America, Citi and Morgan Stanley seeming to be most at risk, BofA led the Dow's declines. Pfizer gained 0.5% after it appointed a new CEO, Ian Read.

NYT pB9 "Bond prices rise, but shares finish flat" by Christine Hauser says bond prices rose and stock indexes ended flat on Mon afer remarks by the Fed Res Chair broadcast over the weekend that left open the possibility of expanding the central bank's bond purchases.

USA Today p6B "Fed chief's coments bring stocks down" by AP says stocks spent most of Mon in a funk brought on by cuatious comments about the economy from Ben Bernanke. Hopes for a compromise on extending Bush era tax cuts & unemployment benefits erased some of the losses.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.49 down from Monday's P/E of 14.51 (year ago it was 18.03); the P/E estimate is 13.33 unchanged from Monday's 13.33 (year ago it was 16.05) and the dividend yield is 2.52 up from Monday's dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.67). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,501.27 down 2.64 from Friday's closing numerator of 1503.91. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.04 down $0.09 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $50.13. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.93 (HPQ/AXP) down 0.02 from Friday's closing median price of $43.95. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $55.02 0+.16 0.29% 2,751,142 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $11.64 -0.22 1.85% 131,075,466 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $264 ($150,391 - $150,127)

MarketWatch Monday 12/6/10 4:52 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Monday ended a three-day winning streak, hampered by worries about Europe’s ability to stem a spreading debt crisis, with losses limited by strength in tech stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,362, -19.90, -0.18%) closed down 19.9 points at 11,362.19, with 20 of its 30 components falling, led lower by Bank of America Corp. (BAC 11.60, -0.04, -0.34%) . Cisco Systems Inc. /(CSCO 19.43, +0.00, +0.01%) climbed the most on the Dow, up 1.9%, after Oppenheimer & Co. upgraded shares in the maker of computer-networking equipment to outperform from market perform. In Europe, officials were meeting Monday in Brussels on possible steps to stabilize the region and avoid more costly bailouts, as Moody’s Investor Service downgraded Hungary’s public-debt rating, saying its fiscal policies would be insufficient for the long haul. Disagreement among euro-zone members about the best solution for the region’s struggles weighed on sentiment heading into the U.S. session, and provided support for the U.S. dollar, Treasurys and gold. Stocks had recovered during the session, with the Dow headed for a fourth-straight day of gains, helped by hopes of more stimulus. Bernanke, in an interview that aired Sunday night on CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” said the central bank could commit more funds to boost the recovery after last month announcing $600 billion in asset purchases. Read more on Bernanke’s interview. Bernanke’s “willingness to go to the mat to continue to stimulate the economy, even if it means going out to 2015 — and it sounds like he is willing to do that — is certainly bullish for stocks,” said Jack Ablin, chief market officer at Harris Private Bank. Among other blue chips on the rise, shares of Pfizer Inc. (PFE 16.79, -0.02, -0.12%) added 0.5% after the world’s biggest pharmaceutical company unexpectedly announced late Sunday that Jeffrey Kindler was retiring as chief executive and chairman. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,223, -1.59, -0.13%) ended 1.6 points, or 0.1%, lower at 1,223.12, with health-care the weakest performer and energy and technology stocks up the most among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,595, +3.46, +0.13%) added 3.46 points, or 0.1%, to 2,594.92. Decliners slightly beat advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where 805 million shares traded. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude oil edged up to end at $89.38 a barrel, while gold rose to a record $1,416.10 an ounce.
