The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,370.06 down 2.42 points or 0.02% from Wednesday's close of 11,372.48. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 17 gained and 13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $12.65 +0.65 5.42% 328,500,103 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was again McDonald's MCD $77.61 -1.13 1.44% 10,592,726 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.50 up from Wednesday's P/E of 14.48 (year ago it was 17.93); the P/E estimate is 13.33 unchanged from Wednesday's 13.33 (year ago it was 16.05) and the dividend yield is 2.52 unchanged from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.52 (last year it was 2.68). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,502.32 down 0.32 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1502.64. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.08 down $0.01 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $50.09. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.17 (HPQ/AXP) up 0.02 from Wednesday's closing median price of $44.15. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $84.11 -0.57 0.67% 3,597,952 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.65 +0.65 5.42% 328,500,103 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $24 ($150,264 - $150,240)

MarketWatch Thursday 12/9/10 5:47 pm by Kate Gibson says broad U.S. stock benchmarks tallied mild gains Thursday as a drop in claims for unemployment benefits bolstered sentiment, even as the dollar’s rise weighed on commodity suppliers. “There is no question that jobless claims have been going slowly in the right direction for a good two months now,” said Fred Fraenkel, vice chairman of Beacon Trust Co. Recent weeks have seen “a continuation of evidence that we have a sluggish recovery in place,” he added. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,233, +4.72, +0.38%) rose 4.72 points, or 0.4%, to 1,233, with financials up the most, while consumer discretionary and technology fell among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,617, +7.51, +0.29%) advanced 7.51 points, or 0.3%, to 2,616.67.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,370, -2.42, -0.02%) failed to muster a closing rally, however. The index ended off 2.42 points at 11,370.06, with 18 of its 30 components rising. Weighing on the blue chips, DuPont Co. (DD 48.20, -0.12, -0.25%) shares fell 1.2% after the company projected 2011 earnings that could miss Wall Street’s expectations. Conversely, Bank of America Corp. (BAC 12.64, -0.01, -0.08%) led blue-chip gains, up 5.4%. The battle between Google and Microsoft heated up Tuesday as Google unveiled its strategy for Chrome OS, including a pilot program - complete with free computers. Advancers edged past decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume topped 1 billion. The government’s weekly count of those filing initial jobless claims declined by 17,000 to 421,000, better than the 425,000 level anticipated by economists polled by MarketWatch. The less-volatile four-week average fell to 427,500, its lowest in more than two years.

MarketWatch Wednesday 12/8/10 4:51 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stock closed slightly higher Wednesday, as a rally in financial stocks and hopes over the impact of tax cuts offset concerns about the deficit and a sell-off in government bonds. The move higher came in a late turnaround after the market stood close to a standstill for most of the session. “After the big announcement on the supposed tax deal — well, it doesn’t seem like it’s all that done yet — and then you have people coming at both sides with an issue,” said Jay Suskind, senior vice president at Duncan-Williams of the divergent views being expressed in the equities and bond markets. “It adds a little more uncertainty into the mix,” Suskind added. But shortly before the close, financials helped lift the major benchmarks into positive ground. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,372, +13.32, +0.12%) rose 13.32 points, or 0.1%, to end at 11,372.48, lifted by shares of Bank of America (BAC 12.04, +0.04, +0.33%) , up 3.7%, and JP Morgan Chase (JPM 40.27, +0.01, +0.03%) , up 2.6%.Shares of Home Depot Inc., (HD 33.98, -0.05, -0.14%) rose 1.4% after the home-improvement retailer hiked its earnings outlook for the second time in two months. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,228, +4.53, +0.37%) rose 4.53 points, or 0.4%, to 1,228.28. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,609, +10.67, +0.41%) gained 10.67 points, or 0.4%, to 2,609.16.His ability to resurrect the stock, reinvigorate sales, jolt the instant-coffee market, and reorient a wayward business that had become a caricature of its former self made Howard Schultz a finalist for MarketWatch's CEO of the Decade honors. For every two stock rising, nearly three fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.1 billion shares exchanged hands. The dollar’s rise on Wednesday helped dent dollar-denominated assets, including gold futures, which fell 1.8% to end at $1,383.20 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange.Oil futures declined after inventory data, with crude down 41 cents to $88.28 a barrel on Nymex.
Provisions of the tax deal, which must still be worked into specific legislation, would allow immediate write-offs of capital investments and “would be very favorable to industrial-equipment makers and immediately drive economic growth,” Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Companies, wrote in a note.
The compromise on taxes is also expected to add to the budget deficit. That concern helped to push the price of U.S. debt down, bringing 10-year note yields, used in determining consumer borrowing costs, to their highest level since June.
On the corporate front, Fortune Brands Inc. (FO 61.76, +0.61, +1.00%) shares rose 1% after the company said it would separate into three pieces, retaining its liquor business and shedding businesses that make products such as locks and golf balls.
