Post No. 791 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 7, 2010 and Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of Dec. 11, 2010.

A read of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data.

My Thoughts: The NY Times at pB1 has an interesting article entitled "Computers that trade on the news" by Graham Bowley that sort of validates the basis of this Blog. It says that Wall Street traders are using powerful computers to speed read news reports, editorials, company Web sites, blog posts and even Twitter messages and then letting the software determine where market sentiment is headed. We are the only Blog that is dedicated to briefly summarizing daily news reports from the leading US business print newspapers with respect to only the Dow and its 30 component firms. On the sustainable front The WSJ today at pB5 has an informative article, "Clean-tech entrepreneurs eye funding shift" by Angus Loten that explains the U.S. Dept. of Energy's loan guarantee program that is expected to sharpen its focus next year to less developed ventures such as carbon capture, biofueuls & biomass processing as more conventional solar and wind projects gain the attention of private investors. The program doesn't make loans, it backstops bank loans. Also in the clean tech area is an article in USA Today p8B "Marriott institutes sustainable seafood program" by Barbara De Lollis that says Marriott has launched a sustainable seafood program called "Future Fish," making it the first large global hotel chain to adopt such a policy.

Dow:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,599.49 up 26.33 points or 0.23% from Tuesday's close of 11,533.16. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 22 gained and 8 declined. For the year the Dow is up 10.85%. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was JPMorgan JPM $42.16 +1.16 2.83% 47,220,781 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $13.38 +0.40 3.08% 239,664,441 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $41.48 -0.43 1.03% 14,697,090 NYSE.

WSJ pC5 "Fin'ls lead way as Dow climbs 26.33" by Donna Yesalavich says stocks closed at fresh 2 yer highs as fin'l firms' shares continued to benefit from recent merger activity. The Dow hit its highest close since Aug. 28, '08 led by fin'l components with BofA up 40 cents and JPMorgan up $1.16.

Fin Time p22 "Financials surge as economic optimism triggers sold rally" by Hanah Kuchler says US stocks closed at levels not seen since the crash of Lehman after data showed the US economy had grown faster than previously estimated in 3Q. JPMorgan surged 2.8% while BofA jumped 3.1%. Microsoft said it was working on a version of its Windows operating systems for devices including tablet computers. Microsoft added 0.4%.

NYT pB11 "Shares rise afer news of economy's growth" by Bloomberg says stocks gained on Wed, sending the S&P 500 index higher for a 5th day as gov data showed the economy grew last quarter at a faster pace than previously estimated.

USA Today p4B "Upbeat economic report boosts stocks" by AP says major stock indexes edged up to 2 year highs on Wed after a report showed that the US economy grew faster than previously thought over the summer. Computer maker Hewlett-Packard had the largest fall dropping 1%.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.74 up from Wednesday's P/E of 14.70 (year ago it was 18.16); the P/E estimate is 13.43 unchanged from Wednesday's 13.43 (year ago it was 16.00) and the dividend yield is 2.48 down from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.49 (last year it was 2.65). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,532.63 up 8.76 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,523.87. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.09 up $0.29 from Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $50.80. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $42.15 (AXP/HPQ) down 0.42 from Tuesday's closing median price of $42.57. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $79.52 +0.17 0.21% 2,123,278 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.38 +0.40 3.08% 239,664,441 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $863 ($153,263 -$152,400)

MarketWatch Wednesday 12/22/10 4:48 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks finished at a two-year high Wednesday, with the S&P 500 Index up for a fifth straight session, as investors sorted through varying signals from earnings and economic data. “There is some mixed news out there,” said Jeffrey Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial, pointing to quarterly results from Nike Inc. (NKE 86.95, -5.35, -5.80%) — one barometer of consumer spending — as raising a flag that there are some concerns that “companies may miss some estimates, and that earnings growth is slowing.” “Maybe the markets are getting ahead of themselves even though there are a lot of good reasons why stocks should be going up,” said Kleintop. Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,560, +26.41, +0.23%) ended up 26.33 points, or 0.2%, at 11,559.49, its highest close since Aug. 28, 2008. Bank of America Corp. (BAC 13.39, +0.01, +0.08%) and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM 42.14, -0.02, -0.05%) led gains in 22 of 30 components. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,259, +4.24, +0.34%) added 4.24 points, or 0.3%, to 1,258.84, with financials leading gains among its 10 industry groups and tech companies leading decliners. It was the benchmark’s highest close since Sept. 8, 2008. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,671, +3.87, +0.15%) rose 3.87 points, or 0.2%, to 2,671.48. For every nine stocks that rose, six fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume was 784.4 million, or 75% of its 30-day average. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude-oil futures finished at $90.48 a barrel, their first close above $90 since October 2008. “Oil up here at 90 bucks seems due for a pullback as well, but the dollar has fallen so much since the last time we were at $90, so it does justify a higher price,” Kleintop said.“We’re not collapsing, but it’s not like everyone is saying let’s go out for Christmas and buy a home,” said Doug Roberts, chief investment strategist at Channel Capital Research. He was referring to data that showed the U.S. economy expanded at a 2.6% rate in the third quarter, faster than previously estimated but below what analysts had expected. Before Wall Street’s opening bell, the government revised slightly higher its estimate of third-quarter economic growth, but the updated estimate came in below analysts’ expectations. Peter Eliades, editor of Stock Market Cycles and manager of Stock Market Cycles Management, tells MarketWatch’s Stacey Delo why he sees the potential for a 25% gain in the S&P 500 Index during the first half of 2011. Later, the National Association of Realtors said sales of existing homes climbed 5.6% in November. Shares of Nike (NKE 86.95, -5.35, -5.80%) fell 5.8% after the athletic shoe and apparel seller warned that climbing prices for cotton and transportation would squeeze its margins.Shares of Walgreen Co. (WAG 38.80, -0.05, -0.13%) added 5.5% after the drugstore giant reported a larger-than-anticipated profit for the first quarter.
