http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,370 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15494.78 up 118.72 or 0.77%   from  Friday's close of 15376.06.  Of  the Dow components  26   gained and  4    declined, not including Goldman Sachs, Nike  and Visa all of which were up (these 3 will replace Alcoa, Bank of America, and Hewlett-Packard as of close of market on  9/20).  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Boeing up $4.34 or 3.9% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard down 33 cents or 1.5%.

As of the open  of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4   of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081.  Monday's  trailing P/E ratio is  16.04 up from Friday's  trailing P/E ratio of 15.96 (last year it was 15.06);  Monday's   P/E estimate is  13.85 up  from Friday's    P/E estimate of 13.43  (year ago it was 12.95) and Monay's  dividend yield is 2.45 unchanged   from Friday's dividend yield of 2.45  (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36   on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2017.67 up 15.46  from Friday's closing numerator of  2002.21. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $67.26 up 52 cents    from Friday's average of $66.74.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $71.03 (DIS/UNH) up  44 cents  from Friday's median closing price of $70.59. The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,546  ($2,017.67 - $200,221) .

MarketWatch 9/16/13 Mon. 4:23 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks mostly rose on Monday, lifting the S&P 500 index to within reach of its record after Larry Summers took his name out of the running to head the Federal Reserve.“Summers had been a critic of quantitative easing, and global markets are thrilled he will not be in charge of taking away their ‘fix’ too quickly,” wrote Nick Raich, chief executive officer at the Earnings Scout, in emailed commentary. Equities were also bolstered by a weekend agreement between the U.S. and Russia on a plan to get rid of Syria’s chemical weapons.
“After the initial shock of the Summers announcement begins to wear off, we expect the stock market to consolidate recent gains, as it digests Fed news and waits to see how developments in Syria progress,” noted Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Companies. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.57%  on Monday came within five points of its record of 1,709.67 hit on Aug. 2. It finished at 1,697.60, up 9.61 points, or 0.6%. Industrials paced gains among its 10 major sectors, only one of which — technology — landed in negative turf. While the S&P 500 on Monday flirted with its first close above 1,700 in six weeks, a Citi Research analyst said he sees the index climbing to 1,900 by the end of 2014. Shares of Packaging Corp. of America PKG +11.27% leapt nearly 11% after the maker of corrugated shipping boxes said it would acquire Boise Inc. BZ -0.08% for about $1.27 billion. Boise rallied 26%.Apple Inc. AAPL -0.18%  fell 3.2%, making the consumer technology company the top decliner on the S&P 500, and adding to losses that have had its shares knocked four out of five sessions since the introduction of a lower-cost iPhone.Allegheny Technologies Inc.’s ATI +0.98%  shares rose 8.1% after the metal processor agreed to sell its tungsten materials unit to Kennametal Inc. KMT +0.85% for $605 million. After a 174-point rise, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.77% gained 118.72 points, or 0.8%, to end at 15,494.78. After hitting a 13-year high of 3,756.24, the Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.12%  fell 4.34 points, or 0.1%, to end at 3,717.85, hit by the losses for Apple. For every stock falling, more than two rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where 655 million shares traded. Composite volume neared 3.1 billion. The dollar DXY -0.31%  declined against the currencies of major U.S. trading partners and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note 10_YEAR -0.35%  dropped 1 basis point to 2.879%. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, oil futures CLV3 -1.89%  fell $1.62, or 1.5%, to $106.59 a barrel, a three-week low.
The price of gold GCZ3 -0.04%  rose $9.20, or 0.7%, to $1,317.80 an ounce, settling higher for the first session in five.Stocks rally after Larry Summers, above, says he is taking his name out of consideration to be the next Fed chief. The exit by Summers, a former Treasury secretary and economic adviser to President Barack Obama, came as some Democrats on the Senate Banking Committee voiced opposition to his potential nomination, which had not been announced.
His exit comes just ahead of a two-day Fed meeting that begins Tuesday, with the central bank expected to start cutting its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases, which are otherwise known as quantitative easing. That stimulus has helped the S&P 500 surge more than 150% from its March 2009 low.A critic of quantitative easing, Summers was viewed as more likely to tighten monetary policy than Janet Yellen, the current Fed vice chair now considered the most likely person to replace Ben Bernanke as Fed chief.Monday’s economic reports included manufacturing in the New York region expanding less than expected this month, despite a pickup in orders and shipments.
The Federal Reserve said industrial production climbed in August. On Friday, Wall Street knocked out a second week of gains as worries about Syria ebbed and as investors looked to this week’s monetary-policy decision by the Fed.On Monday, a United Nations report found “convincing evidence” that poison sarin gas was used in an Aug. 21 attack that killed more than 1,400 people near the Syrian capital of Damascus.

MarketWatch 9/13/13 Fri. 4:15 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose on Friday, with the Dow industrials posting their best week since January, as worries about Syria ebbed and as investors looked to next week’s monetary-policy decision by the Federal Reserve. “Today it seems as if some of the fears of U.S. involvement are receding; oil is down and equities are up, but exactly how much of that can be attributed to Syria is unknown,” said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors. “Discussions about gold quickly dissolve into an almost religious debate. I just remember what an old timer told me when I first got into this business, put 10% of your assets into gold and pray that it never works.’’Lawrence Creatura, Federated Investors“People are starting to set up for the Fed meeting. I don’t think there is big demand for Syrian protection this weekend,” said JJ Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade, of next week’s Federal Open Market Committee gathering and expectations that little would occur in the next two days to change the current discussions to bring Syria’s chemical weapons under international control. Trading volume could evaporate as the session nears an end, given the Yom Kippur holiday that begins at sundown, both Kinahan and Creatura noted. Up 3% on the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.49%  rose 75.42 points, or 0.5%, to 15,376.06 on Friday. Shares of Intel Corp. INTC +3.58%  paced blue-chip gains, up 3.6% after Jefferies upgraded the chip maker to buy from hold. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +0.17%  climbed 6.22 points, or 0.2%, to 3,722.18, leaving it up 1.7% from the week-ago close. For every two stocks falling, more than three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 569 million shares traded. Composite volume topped 2.7 billion. Gold prices fell for a fourth session, with the front-month September contract GCU3 -1.36%  down $13.60, or 1%, at $1,316.80 an ounce. The most-active December contract GCZ3 -0.49% was off $22, or 1.7%, at $1,308.60 an ounce, a 5.6% loss for the week. “Gold is certainly influenced by geopolitical and other macroeconomic phenomena and this week appears to be no exception. Discussions about gold quickly dissolve into an almost religious debate. I just remember what an old timer told me when I first got into this business, ‘put 10% of your assets into gold and pray that it never works,’” said Creatura at Federated. Oil prices fell after a two-day rise, with the front-month October contract CLV3 -0.10%  off 38 cents, or 0.4%, at $108.21 a barrel, a weekly drop of 2.1%.
