9/16/13 Mon Lufthansa Splits Orders with Boeing and airbus

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,369  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's, Investor's News Daily, Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15376.06 up 75.42 or 0.49%   from Thursday's close of 15300.64. For the week the Dow was up 453.56 or 3.0% from last Friday's close of 14,922.50. For the year the Dow is up 17.34% Of  the Dow components  23   gained and  7    declined, not including Goldman Sachs which was down and Nike which was up and Visa which was down (these 3 will replace Alcoa, Bank of America, and Hewlett-Packard as of close of market on  9/20).  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $1.53   and percentage-wise was Intel up 3.58% .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Johnson & Johnson down 44 cents  and percentage-wise was Alcoa down 0.98%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks up in slower trade; several leaders break out" by Paul Whitfield says Friday's action was up in lower volume as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open  of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4   of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081.  Monday's  trailing P/E ratio is  16.04 up from Friday's  trailing P/E ratio of 15.96 (last year it was 15.06);  Monday's   P/E estimate is  13.85 up  from Friday's    P/E estimate of 13.43  (year ago it was 12.95) and Monay's  dividend yield is 2.45 unchanged   from Friday's dividend yield of 2.45  (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36   on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2002.21 up 7.82  from Thursday's closing numerator of 1992.39. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.74 up 33 cents    from Thursday's average of $66.41.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $70.59 (DIS/UNH) up  47 cents  from Thursday's median closing price of $70.12. The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $782  ($200,221 - $199,239) .

MarketWatch 9/13/13 Fri. 4:15 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rose on Friday, with the Dow industrials posting their best week since January, as worries about Syria ebbed and as investors looked to next week’s monetary-policy decision by the Federal Reserve. “Today it seems as if some of the fears of U.S. involvement are receding; oil is down and equities are up, but exactly how much of that can be attributed to Syria is unknown,” said Lawrence Creatura, portfolio manager at Federated Investors. “Discussions about gold quickly dissolve into an almost religious debate. I just remember what an old timer told me when I first got into this business, put 10% of your assets into gold and pray that it never works.’’Lawrence Creatura, Federated Investors“People are starting to set up for the Fed meeting. I don’t think there is big demand for Syrian protection this weekend,” said JJ Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade, of next week’s Federal Open Market Committee gathering and expectations that little would occur in the next two days to change the current discussions to bring Syria’s chemical weapons under international control. Trading volume could evaporate as the session nears an end, given the Yom Kippur holiday that begins at sundown, both Kinahan and Creatura noted. Up 3% on the week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.49%  rose 75.42 points, or 0.5%, to 15,376.06 on Friday. Shares of Intel Corp. INTC +3.58%  paced blue-chip gains, up 3.6% after Jefferies upgraded the chip maker to buy from hold. Paul Vigna and Telis Demos discuss Twitter's IPO plans, and Leslie Scism looks at a showdown between two insurance heavyweights. Safeway Inc. SWY +6.05% was among the top gainers on the S&P 500 IndexSPX +0.27% , with shares of the supermarket chain rising 6.1% after an upgrade by Credit Suisse.Tallying a 2% weekly gain, the S&P 500 Index was up 4.57 points, or 0.3%, at 1,687.99, with consumer staples pacing sector gains and technology its weakest performer. The Nasdaq CompositeCOMP +0.17%  climbed 6.22 points, or 0.2%, to 3,722.18, leaving it up 1.7% from the week-ago close. For every two stocks falling, more than three gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 569 million shares traded. Composite volume topped 2.7 billion. Gold prices fell for a fourth session, with the front-month September contract GCU3 -1.36%  down $13.60, or 1%, at $1,316.80 an ounce. The most-active December contract GCZ3 -0.49% was off $22, or 1.7%, at $1,308.60 an ounce, a 5.6% loss for the week. “Gold is certainly influenced by geopolitical and other macroeconomic phenomena and this week appears to be no exception. Discussions about gold quickly dissolve into an almost religious debate. I just remember what an old timer told me when I first got into this business, ‘put 10% of your assets into gold and pray that it never works,’” said Creatura at Federated. Oil prices fell after a two-day rise, with the front-month October contract CLV3 -0.10%  off 38 cents, or 0.4%, at $108.21 a barrel, a weekly drop of 2.1%. The dollar DXY -0.04%  was little changed against other currencies and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note 10_YEAR -0.86% fell 2 basis points to 2.891.
