http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,349  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Wednesday's   Wall St. Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's News Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 14833.96 up 23.65 or 0.16%   from Friday's close of 14810.31. For the year the Dow is up 13.20%. Of  the Dow components  16   gained and  14    declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was United Technologies up $2.56 or 2.56 % .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was  Microsoft down $1.52 or 4.55%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks finish higher as data buoy shares" by Tomi Kilgore says stocks closed hgher as worries about military strikes in Syria and a rise in treasury yields took the shine off strong economic data.  Microsoft dropped $1.52 while Verizon fell $1.37 after both announced large acquisitions.

NYT pB8 "Congressional talks on Syria thwart early market surge"  & AJC pA13 "Early stock rally fades" by AP says stocks surged early due to view that US won't attack Syria but later as key Republicans called for action the market pared its earlier gains.

IbD pB4 "Stocks end off best levels amid volatile trading day" by Vincent Mao says stocks climbed but ended off their best levels following a volatile trading session as the current outlook is the market is in correction.

FT p20 "Microsoft and Verizon fall despite upbeat start to Sept trading" by Jason Abbruzzese says US stocks had a positive start to Sept despite Microsoft falling after news it would buy Nokia's mobile phone div.  JPMorgan gained 1.2% while Bank of America was up 0.9%.

As of the open  of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's  trailing P/E ratio is  15.47 up from Tuesday's  trailing P/E ratio of 15.45 (last year it was 14.44);  Wednesday's   P/E estimate is  13.47 unchanged  from Tuesday's   opening P/E estimate of 13.47  (year ago it was 12.42) and Wednesday's  dividend yield is 2.49 down   from Tuesday's opening dividend yield of 2.54  (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 15,658.36   on August 2, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1931.62 up 3.04  from Friday's closing numerator of 1928.54. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.39 up 11 cents    from Friday's average of $64.28.  The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.75 (DIS/UNH) up 46 cents  from Friday's median closing price of $66.29. The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $304  ($193,162 - $192,854 ) .
