Now, if you divide the Dow decrease of 4.85 in the Dow numerator by the divisor you get 36.65, the decrease in Thursday's Dow.
The average closing price of Friday's Dow Jones was 35.93 down 0.16 from Thursday's avg. closing price of 36.09. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones was 29.57 up 0.26 from Thursday's median closing price of 29.31.

A read of Friday's 7/10/09 print editions of: Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily and USA Today yielded the following stories about Dow Jones 30 component companies:
WSJ pB1 lead story says XOM Exxon Mobil said it may have a world class find of natural gas locked inside shale formations in Canada. The find is on 250,000 acres it has leased in the Horn River Baysin in northern British Columbia. XOM is also the subject of a related story, "Exxon's Gas Compressor" @ WSJ pC10.
WSJ pB1 has a story about weak June sales are causing retailers to be anxious about back to school sales. In speaking about industry metrics, it mentions that monthly figures don't include WMT WalMart figures because WMT has stopped disclosing monthly sales figures. This failure is also mentioned at Fin Times p12 and Inv. Bus Daily pA1. IBD pB5 has a story about how Target's dividend keeps rising even though in these tough times many otherwise Target loyal customers seek out more affordable options like WMT. NYTimes pB3 notes that WMT has not been performing well all year in a story about retail sale snumber. USA Today p6B in a story about retails sales still falling says WMT is expected to attract young shoppers with trendy electronics and fashions.
WSJ pB1 has a story about MSFT Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and Google CEO Eric Schmidit had an awkward encounte at Alen & Co's Sun Valley conference in Idaho just afte Google announced plans to compete with MSFT's operating system with Google's Chrome.
WSJ pB1 mentions CAT Caterpillar, BA Boeing and MMM 3M as some of the big companies that are pushing back on proposals to regulate the over the counter derivate market.
WSJ pB3 says CVX Chevron said poor profits at refineries and the financial impact of a weakening dollar will damp the boost it gained fom higher crude oil prices in the second quarter.
WSJ pB4 in a story about tv networks are attacking a proposal in Congress that would eliminate the tax deduction as a business expense for advertising prescription drug advertising. DIS Walt Disney's ABC and GE's NBC Universal are among the four major broadcast networks fighting this plan.
WSJ pC1 says JPM JPMorgan and others are complaining to the Treasury Dept that Treasury Dept is asking too much to sell back the warrants held by the gov as part of the $700 billion bail out.
WSJ pC1 said AA Alcoa was down 2.4% yesterday desipte its quarterly loss as reported being less than expected. USA Today p4B in "Markets Thursday" leads off the story saying stocks inched higher Thurs "after Alcoa kicked off the earnings season with better than expected quarterly results."
WSJ pC5 "Stock in the News" under "And the Bad News" charts MRK Merck. IBD pA2 says MRK fell 3.7% to 27.01 yesterday after a clinical trial of its Zetria cholesterol lowering medicine was stopped early for unspecified reasons. Same page it is reported that MRK and Portola Pharmaceuticals will develop a drug to prevent strokes in people with an irregular heart rhythm.
IBD pA4, "GE Spinoff Genpact Avoids Any Big Slump" profiles Inidan outsourcer, GenPact, noting that it began as the global services unit of GE Capital but GE spun it off four years ago.
WSJ pC10 says BAC Bank of Am with its large home loan and credit card portfolios is facing exposure to increased regulation by Congress in a story, "It's Payback Time for US Banks."
WSJ pA13 has a story about Harry J. Gray, the former CEO of UTX United Technologies who died Wed. at age 89. Gray's obituary is at NYT pB9.
