The Dow closed Tuesday at 8359.49 up 27.81 or 0.33% from Monday's close of 8331.68. 19 of the Dow 30 gained with the biggest gainer being HD Home Depot $23.68 +0.57 2.47% 15,578,582 NYSE and the biggest loser being TRV Travelers $39.54 -0.86 2.13% 4,307,024 NYSE.

The current divisor for the Dow found at today's page C4 of The Wall St. Jrnl is
.132319125 unchanged.

Tuesday's Dow numerator was 1106.12 up 3.68 from Monday's closing numerator of 1102.44. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor.

Now, if you divide the Dow increase of 24.5 in the Dow numerator by the divisor you get 27.81, the increase in Monday's Dow.

The average closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones was 36.87 up .12 from Monday's Dow Jones average closing price of 36.75 The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones was 30.44 up .01 from Monday's median closing price of 30.43.

WSJ pB5 in a story about Google challenging MSFT Microsoft says that MSFT on Monday announced it will ofer online vesions of its Office software to consumers free. Under that story is anothe story, "Microsoft to Offer Scaled-Down Office Over Web, Upping Ante with Google." This is also reported at USA Today p3B and on the front page of Fin. Times and again Fin Timesat pA5 in a story, "Another Day, Another Offensive in Micrsoft vs. Google Saga."

NYT pB1 "Bing delivers Credibility to Microsoft" says Bing, MSFT's new search engine, has gotten good reviews since its launch in May.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA2 says MSFT's Windows 7 operating system due out 10/22 won't be immediately purchased by 6 out of 10 companies per a survey.

IBD pA2 says the Nat'l Retail Fed. is rallying its 2,500 member retailers against WMT Walmart for backing Obama's insurance plan for all employees.

NYT pB1 says XOM Exxon Mobil, is investing $600 million in producing liquid transportation fuels from algae in a partnership with synthetic Genomics, a biotechnology company founded by the genomics pioneer J. Craig Venter.

AJC pA8 says JNJ Johnson & Johnson's new cancer drug Yondelis for women with recurring ovarian cancer has the FDA concerned that JNJ's results may not be reliable.

WSJ pB1 in a story about Dell lowering its profit margins for its current quarter thus dashing hopes for a quick end to PC slump mentions that the state of the PC industry should become more clear later today when INTC Intel releases its quartely results.

WSJ B3 has a story about a Canadian coffee chain, Tim Hortons Inc. that outsells MCD McDonalds in Canada and how it is breaking even in its 500 US stores.

WSJ pB6 "Burger King Scraps Plans for $1 Burger" says these plans are being scrapped as a response to upset franchisees. The cheap burger plan was to woo customers from MCD.

WSJ pC5 "Large Stock Focus" says KFT gained .80 or 3.1% to 26.88 as BMO Capital upgraded the stock to "outperform" saying its turnaround will become more evident soon. Story says GE gained .68 or 6.3% to 11.46 as sentiment improved ahead of its second quarter earnings to be reported Fri.

WSJ pC5 says JPM JPM Morgan are set to report earnings which if are good will push financials higher.

USA Today p1B says cosnumers will go to WMT WalMart and Target for their back to school shopping instead of more expensive drug stores.
