7/2 pm Dow Drops 223.32 to 8280.74 Down 2.63%

The Dow closed Thursdday at 8280.74 down 223.32 down 2.63% from Wednesday's close of 8057.42. All 30 of the Dow 30 declined with the biggest loser being IBM $101.73 -3.11 -2.97% 6,891,371 NYSE.

The current divisor for the Dow found at today's page C4 of The Wall St. Jrnl is
.132319125 unchanged.

Thursday's numerator was 1095.70 down 29.55 from Wednesday's numerator of 1125.25. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor.

Now, if you divide the Dow decrease of 29.55 in the Dow numerator by the divisor you get 223.32, the decrease in Thursday's Dow.

The average closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones was $36.52 down .99 from Wed's avg. close of $37.51. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones was $28.59 down $3.41 from Wednesday's median close of $32.00.

The highest closing price Thursday was IBM $101.73 -3.11 2.97% 6,891,371 NYSE and the lowest closing price Thursday again was AA $9.86 -0.49 4.73% 29,083,605 NYSE.

The lowest volume Thursday was UTX United Technologies $50.24 -2.04 3.9% vol: 5,428,522 NYSE and the highest volume was BAC Bank of Am $12.64 -0.41 3.14% 209,972,665 NYSE.

A read of Thursday's 7/2/09 print editions of: Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily and USA Today yielded the following stories about Dow Jones 30 component companies:

WSJ @pB1 has a story, "Boeing Tightens It Grip on Dreamliner Production" that says BA is in talks to buy a fuselage factory from a supplier in an effort to gain more control over the supply chain of its troubled 787 Dreamliner.

NYTimes B2, USA Today p1B, WSJ @pB1 says Lear corp., a maker of automotive seats and interior electronics reached an agreement with JPM JPMorgan Chase and other lenders to get out of bankruptcy. JPM is also noted on the same page in an article about software company's LogMeIn's IPO climbing 25% on its debut day. The IPO was comanaged by JPM. This strong IPO is also reported at Investor's Bus. Daily pA4 (mentioning a 4 year deal it has with INTC Intel) and also at pA2 where it is noted that LogMeIn competes with MSFT Microsfot and CSCO Cisco Systems' WebEx Communications unit. IBD same page says MSFT increased its market share in US Web searches to 8.23% in June from 7.81% in May due to its new Bing search site. Same page, BAC Bank of Am.s Merrill Lynch will pay $300,000 to Mass. to settle a probe into the sale of auction rate securities in Springfiled.

WSJ pB3 says PG Procter & Gamble plans to test a cheaper version of Tide.

WSJ pC1 says KFT Kraft led yesterday's Dow's increase by being up 5%.

WSJ pC2 quotes Mexico's No.1 nonbank money manager Grupo Actinver as liking defensive stocks such as WMT Walmart's Walmart de Mexico. WMT is also in the news at Fin Times p12 mentioning WMT's earlier announcement to support universal health coverage for all employees.

WSJ pA4 says FDA ordered new warning labels for Chantix, made by PFE Pfizer and Zyban, the two most popular prescription smoking cessation pills saying they may be linked to suicides. This is also reported at Inv. Bus. Daily A2, NYT B1 & AJC A14.

WSJ pA8 says XOM Exxon Mobil among others walked away from bidding to rehabiliate one of the world's biggest oil fields in Iraq which bidding was won by a consortium led by BP.

WSJ pC3 has a story about the SEC trying to increase shareholder's influence on exec. compensation and cites the latest shareholders meeting of BAC Bank of Am where labor unions tried to prevent the reelection of CEO Lewis. Same page in a story about Wall Street pay rebounding it is noted that JPM JPM Morgan is relying on its strength and not salaries to attract personnel.

Inv. Bus. Daily A4 has a story about Neutral Tandem making money as local phone companies lose their grip on the telecom business. NT competes with VZ Verizon and T AT&T.

IBD pB3 says the compuer manufacturers group returned ito the leading ranks during the past week. This 10 stock group includes HPQ Hewlett-Packard.

IB pB5 reports that Abbott Labs plans to appeal the $1.67 billion judgment in favor of JNJ Johnson & Johnson for patent infringement re: Humira.

NYTimes B1 has a story about Morgan Stanley saying it may have a loss in the second quarter while JPM JPMorgan Chase quickly returned to profitability by taking on risk in trading for their customers.

NYT B4 says a group of five public pension funds in Ohio and Texas and elsewhere have won the right to lead investor class-action lawsuits against BAC Bank of Am's acquisition of Merrill Lynch, a ruling by the same judge, Denny Chin, who sentenced Madoff.

NYT B6 says Dis Disney NetPal from Asus will be a new netbook for kids with parental controls and Dis content.

NYTimes B9 has a story about major corporations such as IBM, WMT WalMart, PG Procter & Gamble, and HD Home Depot offering to mentor small companies especially disadvantaged businesses.

NYT B9 says an economist sees the Dow hitting 11,000 next year and noted that KFT Kraft, KO Coca-Cola and MCD McDonald's led yesterday's Dow increase. AJC pA12 says MCD will begin selling a new line of bigger burgers for about $4. USA Today 4B notes KFT's increase of $1.27 to close at $26.61 as yesterday's biggest Dow gainer.

AJC pA12 says Coca-Cola Enteprise will add two fuel-cells systems to its Elmsford, NY plant to be supplied and mainained by UTX United Technologies.

USA Today p2B has a story about MSFT's Bing holdings its own against Google in terms of performance.
