Thurssday's Dow numerator was 1082.79 up 0.64 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1082.15. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor.
Now, if you divide the Dow increase of 0.64 in the Dow numerator by the divisor you get 4.76, the inccrease in Thursday's Dow.
The average closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones was 36.09 up .02 from Wednesday's avg. closing price of 36.07. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones was 29.31 the same as yesterday's median closing price.

A read of Thursday's 7/9/09 print editions of: Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily and USA Today yielded the following stories about Dow Jones 30 component companies:
Front page of Fin. Times has a story, "Google to Launch Rival to Windows as it Challenges Microsoft's Dominance." This is also reported at IbD pA4, Fin Times p14,USA Today p1B and NYT pB1. WSJ C5, "Large Stock Focus" says Google rose and it says they are preparing to launch an operating system for computers that will be a "direct assault on the turf" of MSFT Microsoft. WSJ pC10 has a story about MSFT, "New Chrome May Not Shine for Google" says that Google is still a one hit wonder and after spending $6 billion on r&d it doesn't have another money maker so its new operating system is under a lot of pressure from observers to penetrate MSFT's stranglehold on pc operating systems. Google's system is called Chrome. Chrome is the subject of WSJ front page story, "Google Targets Microsoft's Turf." A related story at NYT pB6 says Chrome complicates Google's relationship with Apple, a longtime ally and the interlocking relationship among the two companies' boards could violate Section 8 of the Clayton Antitrust Act.
WSJ pB3 & IBD pA2 reports that MSFT promoted Steven Sinofsky to president of its Windows division.
WSJ C5, "Large Stock Focus" says Family Dollar Stores' good third quarter fiscal earnings helped lift other discounters such as WMT Walmart up .53 or 1.1%.
WSJ C1 and AJC A8 reports that AA Alcoa reported a smaller than expected quarterly loss after yesteday's close. WSJ pB3 has a story, "Alcoa Swings to a Loss Amid Sales Decline - CEO Says He Sees Signs fo Strengthening in Aluminum Sector, as US Auto Market Recovers." NYT pB2 has a story, "Alcoa Posts Loss as Demand Falls" that said analysts expected AA to lose .38 per share on revenue of $3.93 billion but it was actually a loss of .47 per share.
WSJ C1 in a story, "Subprime Resurfaces as Housing Market Woe" says the US housing market is facing new downward pressure as holders of subprime mortgage bonds flood the home with foreclosed homes at prices lower than where many banks are willing to sell. Story mentions countrywide Financial Corp. which is now owned by BA Bank of Amm and loans sold by Bear Stearn prior to its sale to JPM JP Morgan Chase.
WSJ p7 has a story, "J&J Acts Fast on Tylenol - The Challenge: to Reassure Public Without Going Too Far" saying JNJ's quick reaction last week to potentially damaging news about the safety of its painkiller Tylenol furthered the company's reputation for savvy crisis management.
WSJ pD4, "Fixed Rate Credit Cards May Vanish" saying BAC Bank of Am & JPM JPMorgan Chase in June notified some cardholders that their fixed rates were being converted to a variable rate tied to the prime rate.
NYT pA4 has a story about an analyst who said Dis Disney should be a "sell" because the movie Up would be a loser but as things turned out it was a big earner so the analyst at Pali Research apologized but still kept the "sell" rating.
IBD pA2 says VZ Verizon has petitioned FCC for access to Calbevison's NY area sports programs in hd tv, alleging that Cablevision refuses to sell its Madison Square Garden network sports programming in HD on any terms. VZ is the subject of a story about the DOJ looking into whether T AT&T and VZ are abusing their market power by locking up exclusive deals to provide service to popular handsets such as Apple's iPhone in a story, "Antitrust Elevated In Obama Era."
IBD pB says JNJ's strong product line gives it some immunity from a bad economy and that JNJ for the 10 years ending in '08 gave shareholders a 5.6% annual average total return.
Fin Times p15 says IBM's UK subsidiary became the latest UK employer to announce that it may close its pension plan for UK workers.
Fin Times p3 says HPQ Hewlett-Packard is gearing up for cloud consulting services.
Fin Times p2 says Intel held its annual open house Research Day for the media to show its off future technologies and concludes it will need to be more mobile to keep up with aggressive rivals.
