Post No. 527. The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 7/11/10 and an update of the Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of 7/11/10.

A read of Monday's issue of Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Georgia) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 10,198.03 up 59.04 or 0.58% from Thursday's close of 10,138.99. For the week the Dow is up 511.55 or 5.3% from last Friday's close of 9,686.48. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 19 gained and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $64.72 +1.55 2.45% 6,446,686 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Johnson & Johnson JNJ $60.54 -0.84 1.37% 12,120,224 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132319125 unchanged, the trailing P/E ratio is 14.81 up from Friday's 14.72 (year ago it was 12.02) the P/E estimate is 12.51 up from Friday's 11.95 (year ago it was 13.00) and the current dividend yield is 2.72 down from Friday's 2.74 (it was 3.52 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,349.39 up 7.81 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1341.58. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 7.81 for Friday by the divisor (0.132319125) you get the increase in Friday's Dow of 59.04. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.98 up 0.26 from Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $44.72 The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.72 up $0.58 from Thursday's median price of $40.14. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $82.16 +0.94 1.16% 2,814,043 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $15.11 +0.25 1.68% 86,066,436 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $781 ($134,939 - $134,158).

MarketWatch 7/9/10 Fri. 4:36 pm by Donna Yesalavich says U.S. stocks climbed Friday, capping their best week in nearly 12 months, as optimism ahead of the second-quarter earnings season powered a strong rebound from the market's worst levels this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 10,198, +58.73, +0.58%) closed up 58.73 points, or 0.6%, to 10,187.72. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock ndex (SPX 1,078, +7.71, +0.72%) added 7.68 points, or 0.7%, to close at 1,077.93. The four-day rally represents a bounce back after the Dow sank last week to its lowest point since October in its worst five-day performance leading up to July 4 since 1896. The Dow has climbed 5.3% this week, its best weekly performance since the week ended July 17, 2009. The rally comes as investors have grown hopeful that the market's recent drop to 2010 lows may have exaggerated expected effects on corporate earnings from the slumping euro and slower global growth. Earnings Season BeginsAlcoa starts week that includes reports from Intel, Google, GE, Citi and Bank of America. Baseball takes a break for its all-star game; Congress returns from its break to deal with the Kagan nomination and bank reform. Caterpillar Inc. /(CAT 64.61, -0.11, -0.17%) was also strong, up 2.4%, and Chevron Corp. (CVX 71.71, -0.13, -0.18%) climbed 2% as crude-oil futures climbed above $76 a barrel. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,196, +21.05, +0.97%) rose 1%, or 21.05 points, to 2,196.45, bolstered by a 2.4% jump in Google Inc. (GOOG 466.70, -0.79, -0.17%). The company said the Chinese government renewed a license it needed to continue using its Chinese Web address, marking a compromise between the company and Chinese regulators since Google decided to stop cooperating with censorship requirements. The materials sector led the measure's gains, while financial and consumer-discretionary stocks were also strong. Consumer staples were the only category in the red. Data released Friday showed inventories of U.S. wholesalers rose 0.5% in May, in line with expectations, as warehouses were restocked with machinery and other durable goods. Investors noted that while the rise in inventories is seen as lifting economic growth, the data also indicates demand is waning. Among stocks in focus, Madison Square Garden Inc. (MSG 19.35, -0.09, -0.46%) fell 4.6% after basketball star LeBron James late Thursday confirmed reports that he will join the Miami Heat, rather than the MSG-owned New York Knicks.
