Alcoa kicked off earnings by beating market expectations after the close. The stock rose 9% last week, and rose 3% in after hours trading. Tech stocks including Microsoft, SanDisk & Qualcomm rose on analysts upgrades.

WSJ pC5 "Microsoft, SanDisk get a lift" by Donna Yesalavich says markets edged up Mon, led by tech stocks, including Microsoft & SanDisk, following ratings upgrades from analysts. The DJIA's material & industrial components were pulled lower after data showed Chinese imports slowed. United Tech declined 1.2%, while DuPont slipped 1% and Caterpillar dropped 0.7%. Alcoa fell 0.6% and is charted under Bad News says investors retreated a bit ahead of its post close earnings report but bought back in after hours.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132319125 unchanged, the trailing P/E ratio is 14.83 up from Monday's 14.81 (year ago it was 12.29) the P/E estimate is 12.51 unchanged from Monday's 12.51 (year ago it was 13.00) and the current dividend yield is 2.72 unchanged from Monday's 2.72 (it was 3.52 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,351.81 up 2.42 from Friday's closing numerator of 1349.39. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 2.42 for Monday by the divisor (0.132319125) you get the increase in Monday's Dow of 18.24. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.06 up 0.07 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $44.98 The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $41.01 up $0.29 from Friday's median price of $40.72. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $51.12 -0.03 0.06% 2,986,071 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $15.21 +0.10 0.66% 90,600,468 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $192 ($135,181 - $134,939).
