Post No. 552. The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 7/25/10 and an update of the Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of 7/25/10.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 10,525.43 up 100.81 or 0.97% from Friday's close of 10,424.62. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 29 gained and only Walmart declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was 3M MMM $87.32 +1.15 1.33% 4,747,232 NYSE and percentage-wise was Pfizer PFE $15.02 +0.44 3.02% 52,757,403 NYSE. The only decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Walmart WMT $51.13 -0.54 1.05% 14,010,817 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493, the trailing P/E ratio is 14.51 up from Friday's 14.44 (year ago it was 13.98) the P/E estimate is 12.59 up from Friday's 12.49 (year ago it was 14.34) and the current dividend yield is 2.67 down from Friday's 2.75 (it was 3.16 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,390.72 up 8.84 from Friday's closing numerator of 1363.88. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 8.84 for Monday by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in Friday's Dow of 100.81. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.36 up 0.45 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $45.91. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $42.92 up $0.63 from Friday's median price of $42.29. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $87.32 +1.15 1.33% 4,747,232 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $13. NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,332 ($139,072 - $137,740).

MarketWatch 7/26/10 Mon. 4:09 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed near session highs Monday, ending their third-straight winning session with a burst of momentum.
