A read of Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Georgia) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.

Dow: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 10,138.99 up 120.71 or 1.2% from Wednesday's close of 10,018.28. For the year the Dow is down 2.77%. WSJ pC5 "AmEx Up: Cok Rises 1.9%" by Donna Yesalavich says stocks climbed Thurs, marking their third consecutive day in the black as a bigger than expected rop in weekly jobless claims and improved same store sales from a number of retailers lifted McDonald's, American Express and Coke.

WSJ pC1 "Dow's Surge: 452.51 points in 3 days" by Jonathan Cheng says upbeat data on jobs and retail sales helped push stocks to a thrid consecutive gainn marking a strong rebound after a bruising pre-July 4th week driven by doubs about the pace of the global economic recovery.

Fin Times p22 "Double dip worries eased by jobs & retail sales data" by Masa Serdarevic says US stocks held on to the previous day's gains yesterday as a positive jobs report and recent retails sales data helped ease worries about a potential double dip recession.

NYT pB6 "Unemployment filings improve, and investors tally a third day of gains" by Christine Hauser says the latest weekly jobs report on Thurs. propelled stocks for the third day this week, building on gains that analysts hope will be sustained after corp earnings season begins.

USA Today p5B "Drop in jobless claims lifts markets" by Bloomberg says stocks rose Thurs, with the S&P 500 having its first 3 day rally since April, as a drop in jobless claims and higher than forecast sales at some retailers bolstered confidence in the economy. Boeing rose $1.43 as it said it expects to deliver 460 to to 465 airliners this year after an 8.8% drop in shipments last quarter, and announced $3.05 bil in new orders for its 737 model.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132319125 unchanged, the trailing P/E ratio is 14.72 up from Thursday's 14.54 (year ago it was 12.07) the P/E estimate is 11.95 unchanged from Thursday's 11.95 (year ago it was 13.38) and the current dividend yield is 2.74 down from Thursday's 2.75 (it was 3.50 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,341.58 up 15.97 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1325.61. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 15.97 for Thursday by the divisor (0.132319125) you get the increase in Thursday's Dow of 120.71. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.72 up 0.53 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $44.19. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.14 up $0.51 from Wednesday's median price of $39.64. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $50.09 +0.14 0.28% 3,231,484 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $14.86 +0.15 1.02% 132,297,331 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1597 ($134,158 - 132,561).

MarketWatch 7/8/10 Thurs. 4:46 pm by Jonathan Cheng & Kristina Peterson says U.S. stocks staged a late-session rally fueled by the consumer staples and materials sectors to post a third straight day of gains amid mixed data on jobs, retail sales and consumer lending. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 10,139, +120.71, +1.21%) finished up 121 points, or 1.2%, to 10,139, rebounding after a bruising pre-July 4 week. Since Tuesday, the Dow has gained 4.7%, putting the measure back around where it was at the beginning of last week. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,070, +9.98, +0.94%) rose 10 points, or 0.9%, to finish at 1,070. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,175, +15.93, +0.74%) closed up 16 points, or 0.7%, to 2,175. Investors were cheered by strong June retail sales amid good weather and aggressive promotions. Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF 35.45, +2.55, +7.75%) jumped 7.8% after same-store sales rose 9%, beating analysts' estimates of 5.5%. Limited Brands (LTD 23.89, -0.32, -1.34%) gained 2.2% after its sales rose 6%. Consumer staples strengthened as well with Costco Wholesale (COST 54.29, -1.42, -2.55%) gaining 2.6%, and Walgreen (WAG 28.10, -0.02, -0.07%) rising 3.6%. In another positive sign, the Labor Department said initial claims for jobless benefits declined by 21,000 to 454,000 in the week ended July 3, more than the 12,000 drop expected by economists, though the previous week's level was revised upward, to 475,000 from 472,000. But some analysts pointed out the numbers were misleading, since many longer-term unemployed workers had fallen off the rolls. Hot weather-induced buying and a shift in the timing of Memorial Day sales aren't enough to offset inconsistent store traffic. Abercrombie & Fitch jumps, while Gap slips. Credit Suisse analyst Ana Avramovic wrote in a note to clients that, beginning last month, trading volumes by exchange traded funds were increasingly bunching up in the final half-hour of trading. Thursday's finish seemed to follow that pattern to a tee, with the Dow hovering around 10,065 before shooting up about 70 points. The market rally survived a late-day release from the Federal Reserve that showed consumer credit falling in May for the fourth consecutive month. Consumer credit outstanding decreased at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.5%, down $9.1 billion to $2.415 trillion, according to the report, far outstripping the $2.0 billion decline that economists had been expecting. Treasurys declined as economic optimism strengthened, with the 10-year yield (UST10Y 3.03, -0.01, -0.43%) pushing above 3% for the first time in nine days to finish at 3.02%. Yields move inversely to prices. Crude-oil futures edged up to settle at $75.44 a barrel. In other markets, the euro failed to garner any new direction from comments made by European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet. The ECB kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged, as did the Bank of England at its monthly meeting. The euro was recently trading at $1.2692, up from $1.2679 late Wednesday in New York.
