MarketWatch 10/11/10 Monday 5:37 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended slightly higher Monday as Wall Street anticipated earnings from a handful of industry titans and weighed potential moves by the Federal Reserve to boost the economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,010, +3.63, +0.03%) finished up 3.86 points, or 0.035% at 11,010.3. The broader S&P 500 Index /(SPX 1,165, +0.17, +0.02%) gained 0.17 points, or 0.015% to end at 1165.32. “There is a real competition between the glass-is-half-empty and half-full” points of view, said Sandy Lincoln, chief investment strategist at M&I Investment Management. Three Dow components — Intel Corp. (INTC 19.67, +0.11, +0.56%) , J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. (JPM 39.73, +0.42, +1.07%) and General Electric Co.(GE 16.96, -0.16, -0.93%) — are scheduled to report quarterly results in the days ahead. “It’s still early in the reporting season, but so far two out of three companies are giving us positive earnings surprises. If that were to persist, it would be a pretty robust outcome,” Lincoln said. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,402, +0.42, +0.02%) advanced 0.42 points, or 0.02%, to 2,402.33. The bond market was closed for the Columbus Day holiday. Economic news will step up later in the week, with reports on first-time jobless claims, consumer confidence and inflation among those on the calendar. After Friday’s employment report showed the U.S. economy creating fewer private-sector jobs in September than anticipated, Wall Street climbed on the belief that the data bolstered the chances of the Fed buying more debt.
“The markets are in the ‘bad news is good news’ mode, meaning that the poor employment report of Friday, showing private-sector job gains remain very weak, would increase the likelihood that the Fed would continue injecting money into the financial system,” wrote Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners. But M&I Investment’s Lincoln was not among those cheering a further easing of monetary policy by the central bank. “Normally the Fed is very cautious about moving before the evidence is in, and now we’re in this vague area between recovery and expansion. My dream scenario is: The Fed would do nothing,” he said.Advancers outpaced decliners 16 to 13 on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 828 million shares traded. Shares of Gymboree Corp. (GYMB 64.83, +11.88, +22.44%) jumped 22% after private-equity powerhouse Bain Capital said it would acquire the children’s clothing retailer for $1.8 billion.
Chesapeake Energy Corp. (CHK 23.60, +0.30, +1.29%) rose 1% after China’s Cnooc Ltd. (CEO 213.79, -0.62, -0.29%) said it would acquire one-third of the company’s Eagle Ford shale project in Texas. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold ended at $1,354.40 an ounce, while oil finished at $82.11 a barrel. The dollar on Monday gained against the euro and Japanese yen after steadily dropping in recent weeks against both currencies. During the weekend, a meeting of the International Monetary Fund and Group of 20 finance ministers failed to reach any new accords regarding recent currency moves.
