USA Today p1B "As Dow climbs, experts divided" by Adam Shell says athe Dow Jones are flirting with a new bull market high, but Wall St. is split on whether the rally is sending a green light buy signal or flashing a yellow warning sign. The Dow briefly topped its April 26 high of 11,205 on Mon, only to give back the bulk of its gains and close up 31 points at 11,164. If the Dow can capture a new high, it would mark is loftiest level since Mid Sept. '08, just days before the bankruptcy filing of Lehman Bros. & the start of the credit crisis and economic turbulence.

USA Today p6B "Stocks climb on G-20 currency pledge" by Bloomberg says stocks rose Mon, sending the S&P 500 index to a 4th consecutive gain, after the Group of 20 nations pledged to avoid competitive devaluation of currencies & investors bet that the Fed Res will announce further bond purchases.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,475.10 up 4.16 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,470.94. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.17 up 0.14 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $49.03. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $41.09 up 0.14 (HPQ/AXP) from Friday's median price of $40.95. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $90.9 +0.46 0.51% 3,193,069 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $11.16 -0.28 2.45% 327,390,846 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $420 ($147,510 - $147,090).

MarketWatch 10/25/10 Monday 4:46 by Kristina Peterson says US stocks extended three weeks of gains Monday as a weaker dollar boosted raw-materials stocks and hopes for further central-bank stimulus helped the market edge higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,164, +31.49, +0.28%) closed up 31.49 points, or 0.3%, to 11,164.05. Entering the month’s final week of trading, the Dow is up 3.5% for October, buoyed by hopes that the Federal Reserve will take further steps to stimulate the economy at its meeting next week. Retail stocks rise after Office Depot says its Chief Executive Steve Odland is leaving and the office-supplies company projects a quarterly profit. RadioShack is the benchmark retail index's sole decliner. “That’s what’s driving the dollar down,” said Scott Armiger, portfolio manager of Christiana Bank & Trust. While that’s helping stocks right now, he worried about the longer-term effects of the Fed’s expected resumption of bond purchasing. “It’s a pain reliever - it will wear off or we’ll run out of pain relievers and then we’ll be left with a huge deficit.” Materials and industrials led the Dow on Monday, as a weak dollar boosted companies with more exports. DuPont (DD 48.00, +0.30, +0.63%) gained 1.9%, Alcoa Inc. (AA 12.90, +0.02, +0.16%) rose 1.3% and Caterpillar (CAT 79.01, -0.04, -0.05%) added 0.9%.
However, financial companies lagged as questions continued regarding major banks’ foreclosure practices. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said in a speech Monday that federal banking regulators expect preliminary results of their review of the nation’s latest foreclosure troubles to be ready next month. Bank of America Corp. (BAC 11.14, -0.02, -0.18%) slid 2.5%, while J.P. Morgan Chase (JPM 37.12, +0.05, +0.14%) shed 1.7%. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,491, +11.46, +0.46%) closed up 11.46 points, or 0.5% to 2490.85. The Standard & Poor’s 500-share index (SPX 1,186, +2.54, +0.22%) rose 2.54 points, or 0.2% to 1185.62.
Stocks rose and the dollar weakened after finance ministers at a meeting of the Group of 20 industrialized and developing nations vowed over the weekend to avoid “competitive devaluation” of their currencies while curbing external imbalances, in a bid to generate more balanced global economic growth. However, the G-20 didn’t announce specific targets for achieving their goal of “rebalancing” the world’s economy away from an overreliance on U.S. consumers buying imported goods.
The U.S. dollar fell against both the yen (USDYEN 80.7900, 0.0000, 0.0000%) and the euro (EURUSD 1.3944, -0.0021, -0.1504%). In a bright note for the U.S. housing market, existing-home sales rose by more than economists had expected in September. Sales of used homes increased 10% to an annual rate of 4.53 million, according to the National Association of Realtors. Investors said the better-than-expected data did little to diminish expectations that the central bank will announce a new round of purchasing Treasurys, or quantitative easing, next week.
“The promise of QE2 has put downward pressure on the dollar and put downward pressure on interest rates,” said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors. That’s “about as good a combination as you could ask for for the U.S. economy and earnings,” he said. In a sign of investors’ conviction the Fed will buy more bonds, the government sold five-year Treasury inflation-protected securities Monday at a negative yield for the first time ever. Further quantitative easing is expected to stoke inflation, making the TIPS’ expected return positive over five years. Among stocks in focus, Office Depot Inc. (ODP 4.87, +0.08, +1.67%) shares jumped 3.5% after the office-supply retailer announced that Chairman and Chief Executive Steve Odland will resign in one week. The company also said it will report a surprise third-quarter profit on Wednesday.
Citigroup, Inc. (C 4.20, -0.01, -0.24%) shares rose 2.4% after Goldman Sachs added Citigroup shares to its “conviction buy” list. Goldman analysts noted that Citigroup’s exposure to private-label mortgage-backed securities is “small relative to peers.” CommScope Inc. (CTV 30.20, +0.04, +0.13%) shares surged 30% after the maker of telecommunications infrastructure equipment confirmed that it was in talks that could lead private-equity firm Carlyle Group to buy it for $31.50 a share. Among companies reporting earnings, Boyd Gaming (BYD 8.40, +0.02, +0.24%) added 4.9% after the gambling firm said it won’t exercise its right to match the offer MGM Resorts International (MGM 10.93, -0.06, -0.55%) received for its 50% stake in the Borgata resort in Atlantic City, N.J. The company’s third-quarter profit fell 11%. Texas Instruments (TXN 28.61, -0.37, -1.28%) was up 1.1%, while Amgen gained 0.7% ahead of both companies’ quarterly earnings reports.
