WSJ pC5 "Blue Chips end in the black after wallowing in Red" by Donna Yesalavich says US stocks eked out a slim gain, after minutes from a Sept meeting of the Fed Res increased confidence that the central bank will take further action to stimulate the economy. Bank of America led the Dow gaining 37 cents.
NYT pB10 "Fed report lifts shares but brings no surprise" by Christine Hauser says shares on Wall St rose slightly on Tues afer the Fed Reserve revealed some of its disagreements about providing additional stimulus to the lagging economy.
As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493, the trailing P/E ratio is 14.87 up from Tuesday's P/E ratio of 14.86 (year ago it was 15.98) the P/E estimate is 13.15 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 13.15 (year ago it was 15.84) and the current dividend yield is 2.56 unchanged from Tuesday's yield of 2.56 (it was 2.83 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,456.11 up 0.33 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,454.78. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.54 up 0.06 from Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $48.48. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.88 (HPQ/JPM) up 0.52 from Monday's median price of $40.36. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $88.15 -0.10 0.11% 2,468,846 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $13.52 +0.37 2.81% 134,708,230 NYSE.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $32 ($145,611 - $145,479).
MarketWatch 10/12/10 Tuesday 4:36 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks s ended higher Tuesday as Wall Street embraced what was viewed as a more concrete signal from the Federal Reserve that additional monetary easing is coming. “Investors are more comfortable now banking on the Fed taking action on Nov. 3. They pretty much clarified it for the market and suggested that the bulk of the FOMC [Federal Open Market Committee] agrees,” said Jeffrey Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial. “The market was expecting something more wishy-washy.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,020, +10.06, +0.09%) rose 10.06 points, or 0.1%, to end at 11,020.40, with 19 of its 30 components gaining. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,170, +4.45, +0.38%) gained 4.45 points, or 0.4%, to 1,169.77, with financial firms the best performers among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,418, +15.59, +0.65%) added 15.59 points, or 0.7%, to 2,417.92, bolstered by a rise in Apple Inc. (AAPL 298.54, +3.18, +1.08%) after its price target was hiked by Barclays Capital and as discount retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT 53.92, -0.69, -1.26%) said it would begin selling Apple’s iPad.
Shares of another tech titan, Google Inc. (GOOG 541.39, +2.55, +0.47%) , also advanced after a pair of brokers voiced optimism over the Web giant’s improving business prospects. Advancers edged past decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where 923 million shares changed hands. Oil ended below $82 a barrel as the U.S. dollar gained, reducing the commodity’s allure as an alternative investment. The dollar’s rebound from an eight-month low also curbed investor appetite for gold, which lapsed below $1,348 an ounce. “We’ve seen the dollar fall off a cliff here, so to get a bit of a bounce makes sense,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Jefferies & Co. That said, “a one-day blip in the dollar should not dictate what the stock market is doing. We can’t ignore fundamentals forever,” he added.
George Stahl discusses what Pfizer hopes to gain by buying King Pharmaceuticals.
While the Fed signaled it is ready to take further action if needed, Fed Vice Chairwoman Janet Yellen on Monday warned that low interest rates could give companies incentive to take on too much risk. “There is an argument to be made that the financial crisis was started by ultralow interest rates for too long,” commented Hogan. In corporate news, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. (PFE 17.48, +0.10, +0.57%) said it would acquire drug maker King Pharmaceuticals Inc. (KG 14.14, +3.99, +39.31%) for $3.6 billion.
