The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,825.33 up 46 or 0.33% from Wednesday's close of 13,779.17. Of the Dow components 20 gained, and Disney and Hewlett-Packard were unchanged and 8 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $1.03 and percentage-wise was Cisco up 1.94%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was   aIBM down 30 cents nd percentage-wise was Alcoa down 1.2%.


As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.25 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.17 (year ago it was 13.77); today's P/E estimate is 12.28 unchanged from Wednesday' s P/E estimate of 12.28 (year ago it was 12.05) and today's dividend yield is 2.53 down from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2541 (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,800.28 up 6.01 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,794.27. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.01 up 20 cents from Wednesday's average of $59.81. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.09 (DIS/UNH) up 18 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $54.91. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $601 ($180,028 - $179,427).

Thursday MarketWatch 1/24/13  by Polya Lesova says the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose for a fifth day Thursday, helped by a round of economic data including jobless claims, while Apple Inc.’s worst day in four years sank the Nasdaq Composite. The S&P 500  SPX +0.0007% , which like the Nasdaq counts Apple l AAPL -12.35% as its biggest component, squeaked out a 0.01 gain, its seventh straight advance.
The Dow average  DJIA +0.33% climbed 46 points, or 0.3%, to 13,825.33. Boeing Co.  BA +1.39% , up 1.4%, contributed the most to the blue-chip index’s rise, while Cisco Systems Inc.  CSCO +1.94% led percent gains. About 678 million shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange traded hands. NYSE composite volume topped 3.6 billion. “We are seeing better flows from individual investors into equity mutual funds,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 13,7779.17 up 66.96 or 0.49% from Tuesday's close of 13,712.13. For the year the Dow is up 5.15%. Wednesday MarketWatch 1/23/13 4:09 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks rose Wednesday as lawmakers voted to extend the nation's borrowing limit and as Apple Inc. AAPL+0.44% gained as investors anticipated the iPhone maker's results after the close. Apple "does cast a very long shadow, and one that has critical implications for other businesses too, so it gives us a pretty good sense of where we are overall," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank. "Investors like that the Congress people are behaving themselves," said Ablin of the Republican-controlled House voting to suspend the government's $16.4 trillion debt limit until May 19.
