http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,982 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 1/1/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 1/1/13.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Dailly, New York Times & USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,391.36 down 21.19 or 0.16% from Wednesday's close of 13,412.55. For the year the Dow is up 2.19%. Of the Dow components 11 gained and 19 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Merck up 97 cents or 2.34%%.  The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was IBM down $1.46 or 1.4%.

NYT pB7 "shaers fall on hint of Fed idscord" by AP says stocks fell Thurs after an accont of the Fed's last meeting showed a split among bank officials about supporting the economy.

Fin Times p20 "TJX and Gap among the retail winners while discounters falter" by Anora Mahmudova says  analysts at Deutsche Bank cut ratings on UnitedHealth and WellPont to hold from buy saying premium price hikes lagged behind increases in medical costs.  Sahres in UnitedHealth fell 4.7%.

IBD pB2 "Stocks indexes step back after Fed's cautious note" by Paul Whitfield says The Fed's minutes from Dec show some officials favored slowing or stopping stimulus meausres before the end of '13.  Thursday's action was down inf allng vol as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.86 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.90 (year ago it was 13.43); today's P/E estimate is 12.57 unchanged from Thursday' s P/E estimate of 12.57 (year ago it was 12.49) and today's dividend yield is 2.56 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.58). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,743.77 down 2.76 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,746.53. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.13 down 9 cents from Wednesday's average of $58.22. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.55  (DIS/UNH) down 97 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $52.52. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $276 ($174,660 - $174,390).
