1/3/13 Thurs. am Microsoft urges US to hit Google

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,980 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 1/1/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 1/1/13.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Investor's Business Dailly, New York Times & USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 13,412.55 up 308.41 or 2.35% from Monday's close of 13,104.14. For the year the Dow is up 2.35%.  Of the Dow components all 30 gained. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $4.26 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 5.33 %.

WSJ pC1 "Global rally is tinged with caution" by Jonathan Cheng says stock market ivnestors started the year with a bank due to a last minute budget accord in DC.

NYT pB9 "Big gains on Wall St after the fiscal deal" by Nathaniel Popper says the S&P had its biggest gains in more than a year.

AJC pA9 "Stocks soar after deal" by AP says the fiscal cliff deal ignited the stock market Wed.

IBD pB2 "Stocks soar, leaders rally as US dodges fiscal cliff" by David Saito-Chung says Wed's action saw big gains in higher volume while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.90 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.55 (year ago it was 13.43); today's P/E estimate is 12.57 unchanged from Wednesday' s P/E estimate of 12.57 (year ago it was 12.49) and today's dividend yield is 2.62 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.68 (last year it was 2.58). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,746.53 up 40.16 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,706.37. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $58.22 up $1.34 from Monday's average of $56.88. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.52 (DIS/UNH) up 55 cents from Monday's median closing price of $51.97. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $4,016 ($174,660 - $170,637).

Wednesday 1/2/13 MarketWatch 4:18 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks blasted higher on Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average scoring its biggest first-session-of-the-year-point gain ever, as Wall Street welcomed an 11th-hour deal to avoid steep spending cuts and tax increases. "We are happy that we are halfway home to fixing the fiscal cliff," said Art Hogan, market strategist at Lazard Capital Markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +2.35% rose 308.41 points, or 2.4%, to 13,412.55. The S&P 500 index SPX +2.54% advanced 36.06 points, or 2.5%, to 1,462.25. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +3.07% rallied 92.75 points, or 3.1%, to 3,112.26.
