Post No. 2,021 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 1/1/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 1/1/13.
A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,954.42 up 72.49 or 0.52% from Monday's close of 13,881.93. WSJ pC4 "Energy sector juices stocks" by Matt Jarzemsky, Kaitlyn Kiernan says energy shares powered stocks as better thane xpected earnings from Valero Energy outweighed sluggish consumer confidence data. Pfizer jumped 86 cents and is charted under Good News to lead the Dow after its 4Q results beat analysts expectations.
FT p22 "Builders buttressed by robust quarterly results at DR Horton" by Anora Mahmudova says upbeat housing data as well as better than expected quarterlyr sults from DR Horton sents homebuilder stocks sharply higher. US equities markets shrugged off disappointing consuemr confidence data & cont'd their recent upward march, bolstered by positive earnings from energy firms.
IBD pB4 "Indexes mostly move up, but some leaders tumble" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks mostly rose and closed near their session highs Tues but a few leading names fell hard. Tuesday's action was mostly up as trade increases. The current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.
NYT pB6 "Pfizer's earnings strengthen market rally" by AP says the Jan rally on Wall St appeared to be running out of steam Mon as stocks pulled back from their highs but on Tyues theyr esumed thier climb helped by Pfizer posting strong earnings.
AJC pA13 "Dow surges close to 14,000" by AP says Pfizer rose after posting a strong earnings report, giving the Dow a lift.
As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's opening trailing P/E ratio is 15.34 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.38 (year ago it was 13.99); Wednesday's P/E estimate was 12.28 unchanged from Tuesday' s P/E estimate of 12.28 (year ago it was 12.15) and Wednesday's dividend yield was 2.50 down from Tuesday's opening dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.54). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,817.09 up 1.44 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,807.65. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for Monday by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in Moniday's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.57 up 22 cents from Monday's average of $60.25. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.14 (DIS/UNH) up 4 cents from Monday's median closing price of $55.09. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $,1440 ($181,709 - $180,765).
MarketWatch Tuesday 1/29/13 4:33 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks mostly advanced Tuesday as oil prices rose to
four-month highs, lifting the energy sector and offsetting disappointing
