Post No. 2,179  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

 The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15,091.68 down 26.81 or 0.18% from Friday's close of 15,118.49.  Of the Dow components  123  gained and  17 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was JPMorgan up 66 centsand percentage-wise was Pfizer up 1.95 %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.96 and percentage-wise was Alcoa down 1.95%.

As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.53 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.55 (last year it was 14.14); Monday's P/E estimate is 13.55 up from Friday's  P/E estimate of 13.25 (year ago it was 12.11) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.41 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.44 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 15,105.12 on May 8, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,965.18 down 3.49  from Friday's closing numerator of 1,968.67. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $65.50 down 12 cents from Friday's average of $65.62. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.85 (DIS/UNH) down 20 cents from Friday's median closing price of $65.05. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $349 ($196,867 - $196,518).

The S&P 500 index SPX +0.0043% finished marginally higher at 1,633.77 compared with 1,633.70 on Friday, marking an all-time closing high. The Nasdaq Composite index COMP +0.06% gained 2.21 points to 3,438.79. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.18% dropped 26.81 points to 15,091.68, as aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. AA -1.95% declined 2%.

 A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, the Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. -  carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15,118.49 up 35.87 or 0.24% from Thursday's close of 15,08.62.For the year the Dow is up 15.4%.   For the week the Dow is up 144.53 or 0.96% from last Friday's Close of 14,973.96.  Of the Dow components  23  gained and  7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was 3M up $1.72 or 1.5%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $1.58 and percentage-wise was JPMorgan down 1.45%.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,968.67 up 1.74  from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,966.93. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $65.62 up 15 cents from Thursday's average of $65.47. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $65.05 (DIS/UNH) up 74 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $64.31. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $174 ($196,867 - $196,400).

Cisco:  WSJ pB2 "Cisco tries reinvention in tough time" by Drew Fitzgerald says a range of frims from Cisco rival Juniper to IBM have caught investors off guard recently as corporate belt tightening saps their growth.   Cisco's results on Wed will provide a look into how business conditions were in April.
