Post No. 2,198 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of May 16 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings also as of May 16.
A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution& Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 15,294.50 down 12.67 or 0.08% from Wednesday's close of 15,307.17. For the year the Dow is up 16.72%. Of the Dow components 9 gained and 21 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up $3.63 or 17.1%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Johnson & Johnson down $1.25 and percentage-wise was Alcoa down 1.73%.
WSJ pC1 "World shakes off Nikkei's .3% plunge" by Jonathan Cheng says shortly after the Nikkei Stock Average suffered one of its worst single-day declines in decades, Japan's economy minister moved quickly to soothe market fears.
AJC pA13 "HP surges on earnings" by AP says Hewlett-Packard surged $3.63 after its 2Q earnings topped estimates.
FT p22 "Hewlett-Packard results exceed forecasts and help support S&P" by Reuters says US stocks pared their losses Thurs thanks to strength in Hewlett-Packard and Boeing.
IBD pB2 "Stocks trim early losses; flash crash hits 2 utilities" by Paul Whitfield says Thruday's action saw indexes trim losses while the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.71 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 19.29 (last year it was 13.81); today's closing P/E estimate is 13.72 down from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.02 (year ago it was 11.75) and today's closing dividend yield is 2.36 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.06 (last year it was 2.65). The Dow's all-time high was 15,387.58 on May 21, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1991.59 down 1.65 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1993.24. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.39 down 5 cents from Wednesday's average of $66.44. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.80 (DIS/UNH) down 13 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $63.93. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $165 ($199,324- $199,159).
5/23/13 Thursday 4:29 pm MarketWatch by Polya Lesova, Victor Reklaitis says US stocks fell modestly on Thursday, substantially paring intraday losses after upbeat U.S. economic reports and gains for Hewlett-Packard Co. countered worries about the Federal Reserve potentially tapering its bond-buying program.Stocks had dropped sharply at the start of trading, taking their cue from a massive selloff in Japanese equities overnight. However, they began to lift off their session lows after the release of housing data mid-morning.The session was choppy, with stocks briefly rising into positive territory only to surrender those gains. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index SPX -0.29% dipped 4.84 points, or 0.3%, to end at 1,650.51, with utilities leading declines among its 10 major sectors and telecommunications the only gainer. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.11% fell 3.88 points, or 0.1%, to 3,459.42.After dropping as much as 127 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.08% finished down 12.67 points, or 0.1%, at 15,294.50, with only nine of its 30 components in positive territory. The blue-chip index was helped by a 17% jump by Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ +17.10% following the computer maker’s earnings report.Concern the Fed is poised to reduce its program to stimulate the U.S. economy hit European financial markets hard after causing turmoil in Asia.Japanese stocks led an Asian selloff Thursday, with the Nikkei Stock Average JP:NIK -7.32% plunging 7.3%, its worst single-day loss since March 2011.The Japanese retreat came as 10-year Japanese government bond yields surged to their highest level in more than a year, forcing the Bank of Japan to offer 2 trillion yen ($19 billion) in funds to try to placate markets. An unexpected contraction in Chinese manufacturing also weighed. On Wednesday, minutes from the latest Federal Reserve policy meeting and testimony from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke suggested the central bank’s bond-buying program could be pared back in coming months. “Yes, stocks really can go down,” said Brian Belski, chief investment strategist at BMO Capital Markets. Before staging a negative reversal Wednesday, the S&P 500 had risen to an intraday record of 1,687.18 representing an 18% gain in 2013 to date. But Belski, speaking early Thursday, added that he views the current action as just a pullback.“Do we believe the bull market is over? Categorically no,” he said. “This is a calm. This is a respite. This is not 2008.”Other strategists also have said they’re not expecting a deep drop for U.S. equities, saying the Nikkei was more “stretched.”U.S. stock futures had been sharply lower ahead of the Wall Street open, but the stock market pared losses as the regular session progressed. That signals there were people with money on the sidelines waiting to buy on a sloppy day, said Robert Doll, chief equity strategist at Nuveen Asset Management.
