5/21/13 Tues am United is Flying Dreamliners

Post No. 2,192  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of May 16 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings also as of May 16.

A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily,  New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal Constitution& Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 15,335.28 down 19.12 or 0.12% from Friday's close of 15,354.40. For the year the Dow is up 17.03%.  Of the Dow components 11  gained and  19  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Chevron up $1.30 and percentage-wise was American Express up 1.49%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Procter & Gamble down $1.03 and percentage-wise was Merck down 1.72%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks hit pause after a record run" by Alexandra Scaggs says stocks took a breather from their recent rally as declines in some of the years best performing sectors weighed on indexes.

NYT pB12 "Markets leap then walk back" by Reuters says stocks ended little changed on Mon with indexes hovering near highs as concerns about a correction cut earlier gains which had been prompted by news about a flurry of acquisitions.

IBD pB2 "Stocks close flat after 4 week winning streak" by Vincent Mao says Monday's action was flat in lower rade while the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6  of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.73 down from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.75 (last year it was 13.75); today's closing P/E estimate is 13.72 unchanged from Monday's  P/E estimate of 13.72 (year ago it was 11.75) and today's closing dividend yield is 2.33 unchanged   from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.33 (last year it was 2.65). The Dow's all-time high was 15,354.79 on May 17, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,996.90 down 2.49 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,999.39. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.56 down 9 cents from Friday's average of $66.65.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $62.83 (DIS/UNH) up $1.84 cents from Friday's median closing price of $64.67. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $249  ($199,939 - $199,690).

5/20/13 Monday 4:03  pm MarketWatch by Wallace Witkowski says US stocks finished slightly lower Monday after many reached new all-time highs early in the session, only to retreat near intraday lows soon after. At 4 p.m. Eastern, the S&P 500 Index SPX -0.07% declined 0.1% to 1,666, with energy stocks in the lead and consumer staples as the day's biggest laggard. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.12% was down 0.1% at 15,335, and the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -0.07% fell 0.1% to 3,496.
