http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,188  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of May 16 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings also as of May 16.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily,  the combined Sat/Sun issues of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times, Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15,354.40 up 121.57 or 0.80% from Thursday's close of 15,233.22. For the year the Dow is up17.17 %. For the week the Dow was up  235.91 or 1.56%  from last Friday's close of 15,118.49. Of the Dow components  22  gained, Disney was unchanged and  7  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was IBM up $3.88 and percentage-wise was JPMorgan up 2.52%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Walmart down 71 cents or 0.90%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks rise volume sags" by Paul Whitfield says stocks booked solid gains Fri as the major indexes notched their 4th straight up week.  Friday's action was up in lower volume despite expirations day.  The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

Sat. NYT pB6 "Gains for a 4th week in a row, and milestones, too" by Reuters says stocks continued their climb into uncarted territory Fri racking up gains as encouraging economic data propted investors to buy shares of growth firms.

FT p11 "Wall St racks up 4th week of consecutive gains" by Arash Massoudi says Wall st roared to new heights notching tis 4th consecutive week of gains as investors bid shares in fin'l sector stocks.

Sat. AJC pA14 "Economic hopes lift stocks" by AP says stocks closed higher for a 4th straight week on optimism about the economy and record corp earnings and ongoing stimulus from the Fed which is keeping borrowing costs at low levels.

As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's closing trailing P/E ratio is 16.75 up from Friday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 16.58 (last year it was 13.60); Friday's closing P/E estimate is 13.72 up from Friday's opening  P/E estimate of 13.55 (year ago it was 11.75) and Friday's closing dividend yield is 2.33 down   from Friday's opening dividend yield of 2.37 (last year it was 2.79). The Dow's all-time high was 15,354.79 on May 17, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,999.39 up 15.78 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,983.61. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $66.65 up 53 cents from Thursday's average of $66.12. The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $64.67 (DIS/UNH) up 36 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $64.31. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,578  ($199,939 - $198,361).

5/17/13 Friday 4:01  pm MarketWatch by Kate Gibson says US stocks on Friday advanced to a fourth weekly gain, with both the Dow industrials and the S&P 500 rising to all-time records, after data cast a positive spin on the economy. "Certainly economic data support the market rising, and there is still a huge element related to quantitative easing for sure," Randy Frederick, managing director of active trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab, said of ongoing monetary easing by the U.S. Federal Reserve. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.80% rose 121.18 points to 15,354.40. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.95% climbed 11.95 points to 1,662.42. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.97% added 33.72 points to 3,498.96.
