Post No. 2,605 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. -carries Georgia) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 16247.22 up 181.55 or 1.13% Friday's close of 16065.67. For the year the Dow is down 2.0%. Of the Dow components all 30 gained. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was IBM up $3.60 or 1.98%.
WSJ pC4 "Stocks rise as investors shrug off Crimea" by Matt Jarzemsky says US stocks climbed as investors took Crimea's widely expected vote to secede from Ukraine in stride.
FT p19 "Wall street" by Eric Platt says US equity markets climbed as the EU & the US imposed sanctions on several top Russian officials but stopped short of wider restrictions against the nation.
IBD pB2 "Stocks rebound strongly but volume takes a dive" by Vincent Mao says stocks rebounded Monday but the session showed some underlying softness as Monday's action was stocks rebound in lower trade & the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.
NYT pB3 "Markets worldwide brush off Crimea vote" by David Jolly says global fin'l markets shrugged off possible russian annexation of Crimea as stocks rose storngly on Wall St and in europe.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.96 up from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.79 (last year it was 15.90). Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.52 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 14.52 (year ago it was 12.97) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.19 down from Monday's dividend yield of 2.21 (last year it was 2.46). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2529.95 up 28.27 from Friday's closing numerator of 2501.68. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.33 up 94 cents from Friday's average closing price of $83.39. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.71 (PG/HD) up 73 cents from Friday's median closing price of $79.18 (HD/PG). The lowest volume was Visa and the highest volume was GE.
If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $2,827 ($252,995 - $250,017).
3/17/14 Mon. 4:40 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks finished Monday with strong gains as
investors shrugged off the narrow scope of EU and U.S. sanctions
following the vote in Crimea in favor of leaving Ukraine.Investors instead focused on better-than-expected economic data,
including industrial production and manufacturing activity in the New
York region. However, stocks rose amid the lowest trading volumes this
year.The S&P 500
SPX
+0.96%
ended the day 17.70 points, or 1%, higher at 1,858.83, finishing above a
technical level of 1,850. Industrials and technology stocks lead
broad-based gains. The benchmark index turned positive for the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average
DJIA
+1.13%
gained 181.55 points, or 1.1%, to 16,247.22, rising for the first time
in six sessions. All 30 members of the blue-chip index rose on Monday. The Nasdaq Composite
COMP
+0.81%
finished the day 34.55 points, or 0.8%, higher at 4,279.95.“Markets had
discounted the vote in Crimea, but they also expected a
much harsher reaction from the Western governments,” said Quincy Krosby,
market strategist at Prudential Financial.“Angela Merkel’s comment last
week led the market to believe that
sanctions would be more significant. As sanctions turned out to be
minimal, markets quickly moved on and were able to focus on economic
data, which were good,” she added.A batch of economic reports released
before and after the market opened showed data that was slightly better
than expected. Industrial production
in February grew at the fastest monthly rate in six months, bouncing
back after a weather-addled start to the year. An index of manufacturing conditions in the New York region showed modest improvement in March after a sharp drop in the prior month.Separately, a gauge of confidence among home builders
ticked up in March, but remained close to the lowest level since May
and signaled that builders, generally, are pessimistic about sales
trends, according to data released Monday.Later this week, investors
will also get a Federal Open Market Committee meeting.Markets sold off
last week as fears over the events in Ukraine forced
investors to seek safe havens. However, once the outcome of the vote was
made public, stock markets around the globe rose. After the
overwhelming majority of Crimeans voted to break away from Ukraine on
Sunday, Russia took another step to annexing the region despite the sanctions. Global stock markets, including the U.S. market shrugged off sanctions
by the Western government in the wake of the vote in Crimea. The EU ministers
imposed visa bans on 21 Russian officials and froze assets, according
the Wall Street Journal citing sources, while the White House followed
suit, targeting President Vladimir Putin’s closest advisers and other
top Russian policy makers.Among individual stocks, Yahoo
YHOO
-0.03%
shares rose 4%. The company owns a 24% stake in Alibaba, which is
reportedly getting ready for an initial public offering in New York. At
the same time, Alibaba’s smartphone-payment system has been blocked by China because of potential consumer risks.
