3/8/14 Sat. New Boeing 787 Wing Problem

Post No. 2,593 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily; the combined Saturday & Sunday issues of each of the Wall St. Journal &   Financial Times; and Saturday's New York Times &    Atlanta Journal & Constitution    yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 16452.72 up 30.83 or 0.19%    from Thursday's close of 16421.89.   For the week the Dow was up 131.01 or 0.8% from last Friday's close of 16321.71. For the year the Dow is down 0.75%. Of the Dow components   14  gained and 16 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Goldman Sachs up $1.66 and percentage-wise was Nike up 1.59%.   The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Disney down $1.13 or 1.36%.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2561.95 up 4.80  from  Thursday's closing numerator of 2557.15. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

IBD pB8 "Doubts dog the Nasdaq, but S&P sees no problem" by Paul Whitfield says stocks finished the week on a doubtful note as the indexes turned mixed in higher volume.  The current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

Sat. AJC pA8 "Ukraine offsets jobs report" by AP says the stock market ended mixed Fri after a day of muddled trading as investors focused on the Ukraine tensions.  It was not enough to offset optimism over a pickup in hiring by US employers last month.

As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6  of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.16 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.15     (last year it was 15.76).  Monday's P/E estimate is 14.75 up from  Friday's P/E estimate of 14.55   (year ago it was 12.69) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.15 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.15  (last year it was 2.43). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.40 up 16 cents    from Thursday's average closing price of $85.24. The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.84  (NKE/DIS) up 6 cents  from Thursday's median closing price of $80.78    (NKE/DIS). The lowest volume was 3M  and the highest volume was Verizon  .

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $480  ($256,195 - $255,715).

3/7/14 Fri. 4:08   pm MarketWatch by William L. Watts says U.S. stocks ended mostly higher but trimmed earlier gains scored after a bigger-than-expected rise in February nonfarm payrolls. The S&P 500 SPX +0.05% rose 1.01 point, or 0.1%, to 1,878.04, marking another record close for the index, which also posted a 1% weekly rise. The Dow industrials DJIA +0.19% also held on to gains, rising 30.83 points, or 0.2%, to 16,452.72, contributing to a 0.8% weekly advance. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.37% bucked the trend, losing 15.90 points, or 0.4%, to 4,336.22, and trimming its weekly rise to 0.7%.
