Post No. 2,586 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 16395.88 up 227.85 or 1.41%    from Monday's close of 16168.03.      Of the Dow components   all 30 and gained.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $3.99 and percentage-wise was American Express up 2.93%.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2553.10 up 35.48 from  Monday's closing numerator of 2517.62. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5  of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.89 down from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.05    (last year it was 15.58).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 14.55 unchanged from  Monday's P/E estimate of 14.55        (year ago it was 12.53) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.19 up from Monday's dividend yield of 2.18  (last year it was 2.49). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.10 up $1.18      from Monday's average closing price of $83.92. The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.17  (NKE/DIS) up  $1.70  from Monday's median closing price of $78.47    (PG/DIS). The lowest volume was Travelers   and the highest volume was Verizon  .
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $3,548  ($255,310 - $251,762).
3/4/14 Tues. 4:11   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market finished Tuesday with the best gains this year, as the S&P 500 closed at a record high for the 49th time in the past 12 months. Risk appetite returned after reports that Russian troops ended military exercises in the border regions with Ukraine, easing tensions that spooked investors the previous session. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.41% gained 227.85 points, or 1.4%, to 16,395.88. The S&P 500 SPX +1.53% finished near session highs, adding 28.18 points, or 1.5%, to 1,873.91. It was the best one-day percentage gain for both the benchmark index and blue-chips since Dec 18, 2013. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.75% gained 74.67 points, or 1.8%, to 4,351.97, its best gain in four months. The tech-heavy index closed at highest level since April 2000. The Russell 2000 RUT +2.75% index of small-cap stocks also closed at a record high, adding 32.25 points, or 2.7% to 1,208.61.
