The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 16331.05 up 108.88 or 0.67%  from Wednesday's close of 16222.17. Of the Dow components  25 gained  and  5 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise Was IBM up  $3.19 and percentage-wise was AT&T up 3.43%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Procter & Gamble down 46 cents and percentage-wise was Merck down 0.71%.


As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.94 down from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.05  (last year it was 16.11).  Thursday's P/E estimate is 14.52 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 14.52   (year ago it was 12.97) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.19 up  from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.18  (last year it was 2.45). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2543 up 17.11 from  Wednesday's closing numerator of 2525.89.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.


The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.77 up 57 cents  from Wednesday's average closing price of $84.20. The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.68  (NKE/HD) up 24 cents   from Wednesday's median closing price of $79.44    (NKE/HD). The lowest volume was 3M  and the highest volume was AT&T.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,711  ($254,300 - $252,589).

3/20/14 Thurs. 4:07   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks reversed post-Fed losses and finished Thursday with modest gains. Upbeat data from Philadelphia Fed, showing a rebound in manufacturing in March, boosted confidence. Manufacturing data, along with the leading indicators report, suggested that the slowdown during the unusually cold and snowy winter was short-lived. The S&P 500 SPX +0.60% ended the day 11.24 points, or 0.6%, higher at 1,872.01. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.67% gained 108.88 points, or 0.7%, to 16,331.05. The Nasdaq COMP +0.27% finished the day 11.68 points, or 0.3%, higher at 4,319.29.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 16222.17 down 114.02 or 0.70%  from Tuesday's close of 16336.19. For the year the Dow is down 2.14%. Of the Dow components 4  gained, Cisco was unchanged  and 25 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth Group up $1.96 or 2.51%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Visa down $2.65 or 1.77%.

NYT pB11 "Yellen's signal on rate increases causes a slide" by Reuters says the stock market fell on Wed after Yellen raised the possibility of an earlier than expected increase in interest rates next year.

FT p21 "US stocks edge back as Fed reduces bond buying further" by Dave Shellock says the Fed announced a further $10bn reduction in its monthly asset purchases to $55 bn.

IBD pB2 "Indexes fall, volume rises after Fed taper continues" by David Saito-Chung says Wednesday's action saw broad drop in higher trade as the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

3/19/14 Wed. 4:07   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks declined on Wednesday after Federal Reserve chairwoman Janet Yellen said that rate hikes could happen after 'about six months' from the time tapering of bond purchases is finished. Yellen fielded questions from the press following the Fed policy announcement in her first news conference as the Fed chairwoman, succeeding Ben Bernanke. The FOMC decided to reduce the bond purchases by another $10 billion this month and changed the way it targets unemployment and inflation in deciding short-term interest rates. The S&P 500 SPX -0.61% ended the day 11.48 points, or 0.6%, lower at 1,860.77, falling after two days of gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.70% dropped 114.02 points, or 0.7%, to 16,222.17. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.59% finished the day 25.71 points, or 0.6%, lower at 4,307.60.
