11/17/14 Mon. am Home Depot to Report Tuesday
by Dan Kolber

Post No. 2,916 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's  Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 17634.74 down 18.05 or 0.10% from Thursday's close of 17652.79.   For the year the Dow is up 6.4%. Of the Dow components 15   gained and 15  declined. The biggest gainer   dollar-wise was IBM up $1.37 and percentage-wise was Cisco up 2.49%.  The biggest decliner dollar-wise   was Visa down $2.08 and percentage-wise were Visa and Johnson & Johnson down 0.83 %.

IBD pB8 "Stock indexes tack on small gains once again" by Paul Whitfield says stocks inched up  Friday as the indexes wrapped up a week of small moves.  Friday's action was up in lower volume while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.57 down from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.75  (last year it was 16.39).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.52 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.45 (year ago it was 15.02) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.41 down from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.22  (last year it was 2.06). The Dow's all-time high was 17652.79 on November 13,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2746.00 down 2.82  from  Thursday's   numerator of 2748.82.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.53 down 10 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $91.63.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.95  (DIS/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $282  ($274,882 -$274,600).

11/14/14 Fri. 4:48 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks ended Friday’s uneven trading session fractionally higher, but still managed to post a fourth-straight weekly gain. The main benchmarks switched between small gains and losses throughout the trading session, as investor reaction to upbeat economic data, namely retail sales and consumer confidence, was mostly muted. Both retail sales and consumer sentiment data showed Americans were benefiting from lower gas prices and are prepared to increase their spending during the crucial, holiday-shopping season. That promises to be a boon for the economy as retail sales account for one-third of consumer spending, the main engine of U.S. economic activity. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.02% closed at a record high after ending a fraction of a point higher at 2,039.82. The benchmark index gained 0.4% over the week. The Dow industrials DJIA, -0.10%  slipped 18 points, or 0.1%, to close at 17,634.74, but still gained 0.4% over the past five sessions. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.18%  closed 8.4 points, or 0.2%, higher at 4,688.54, as gains in the Internet stocks outweighed losses in biotechs. The tech-heavy index gained 1.2% over the week.Jeff Kravetz, regional investment manager for Phoenix-based U.S. Bank Wealth Management, said markets are reflecting the fact there are lots of conflicting signals.“On one hand, economic data lately have been friendly to equities, as most reports are positive. On the other hand, volatility in oil prices and geopolitical risks are weighing on sentiment,” Kravetz said.Kravetz, however, thinks that U.S. equities are still attractive for foreign investors as there are very few other alternatives.Economic data: Sales at U.S. retailers rose in October, snapping back from the first decline in eight months as gasoline prices continued to plunge. The uptick in spending last month, especially when gasoline is stripped out, suggests households could be prepared to spend more during the holiday season than they have in years. The prices paid for imported goods fell in October, largely due to plunging global oil prices, the Labor Department said Friday. The drop was in line with forecasts. The preliminary November reading on the University of Michigan/Thomson Reuters consumer-sentiment index rose to the highest level since July 2007.
