Post No. 2,929 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 17817.90 up 7.84 or 0.04 % from Friday's close of 17810.06. Of the Dow components 16   gained,  DuPont was changed and  13  declined. The biggest gainer   dollar-wise was Boeing up $1.83 and percentage-wise was Intel up 1.85%.  The biggest decliner dollar-wise was United Technologies down $1.51  and percentage-wise was AT&T  down 1.64%.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.83 up from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.80  (last year it was 16.50).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.60 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.52 (year ago it was 15.02) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.17 down from  Friday's dividend yield of 2.19  (last year it was 2.09). The Dow's all-time high was 17817.90 on November 24,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.48 up 4 cents from Friday's  average closing price of $92.44.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.38  (AXP/MCD) down 16 cents from Friday's median closing price of $93.54 (AXP/JMCD). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was AT&T.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $122  ($277,453 -$277,331).

11/22/14 Mon. 5:00 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Carla Mozee says the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at record levels on Monday, but it was the small-caps and the Nasdaq Composite who stole the show. Small-caps rallied and outperformed their large counterparts, in a sign that the current bull market has not run out of steam yet. Trading volumes were lower than usual, as the week is cut short by Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.29%  closed 5.91 points, or 0.3%, higher at 2,069.41, the 46th time it closed at record level this year. Consumer discretionary and tech sector stocks led the gains. The heaviest-weighted company on the index, Apple, Inc. rose 1.9%, helping lift the benchmark. The telecom sector was the weakest of the S&P 500’s 10 sectors on Monday, as investors expressed concern over rising costs and increasing competition. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.04%   dipped in an out of negative territory but closed marginally higher, adding 7.87 points to 17,817. The blue-chip index hit a record high for the 29th time this year.Monday trading also saw small stocks outperform large-cap stocks. The Russell 2000 RUT, +1.24%  rose 14 points, or 1.2% to 1,186.22, while the Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.89%  ended the day up 41.92 points, or 0.9%, at 4,754.89, thanks to a rally in biotechnology sector stocks.John Manley, chief equity strategist at Wells Fargo, cautioned not to read too much into market moves this week, ahead of Thanksgiving holiday.Speaking about the market’s run in 2014 and valuations, Manley said that stocks are fairly priced given earnings expectations for the S&P 500 next year are at $125-130 per share.“Big bull markets end with irrationality - when all the people, who lost out on the rally decide to join in. We do not see that yet, as there is still a lot of cash on the sidelines,” Manley said. The economic calendar is thin on Monday, but later in the week, investors will receive a stack of updates on housing, inflation and a revision in third-quarter gross domestic product for the U.S.

NYT pB7 "Shares extend gains on overseas economic news" & AJC pA12 "Dow, S&P push record" by AP say   the market closed out its 5th straight week of gains with another record high Fri due a strong 3Q earnings season on top of a recent string of good US economic data re: housing, jobs & manufacturing.

FT p14 "Wall street" by Mamta badkar says gold stocks were buoyed after People's Bank of China loosened policy.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $1,418  ($277,331 - $275,913).

11/21/14 Fri. 4:55 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says the U.S. stock market ended the week in rally mode Friday. Sparked by a surprise dose of liquidity measures launched by China’s central bank and dovish comments from European Central Bank President Mario Draghi on Friday, U.S. equities recorded their fifth-straight week of gains. After timidly moving higher over the course of the past few trading sessions, more detailed talk of stimulus by economic world leaders at some of the biggest, and most sluggish, economies helped push stocks higher. Shares pulled back off their highs later in the trading day, as some of the initial unabashed elation wore off.Still, the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average registered its best one-day gains in more than two weeks and closed at record levels for the 45th and 28th times this year, respectively. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.52%  closed 10.75 points, or 0.5% higher at 2,063.50, with broad-based gains led by materials and energy sector stocks. The benchmark index gained 1.2% over the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.51%  jumped 91.06 points, or 0.5%, to 17,810.06, and booked a 1% gain over the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.24%  rose 11 points, or 0.2%, to 4,712.97 and added 0.5% over the past five sessions. J.J. Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade, commenting on prices pulling back from even loftier levels speculated that the realization that today’s news from China and Europe was not all that good may be behind the fading of the rally.“While in the short term, cutting rates and buying bonds by central banks is good for equities, the underlying reasons are not positive — those actions are a response to a slowing and weak demand. Their economies are in trouble,” said Kinahan.“Also, the S&P 500 hit a resistance level at 2,071 and it’s not surprising to retrench a few times,” he added.China’s central bank cut its one-year loan rate by 0.4 percentage points and its one-year deposit rate by 0.25 percentage points while saying it would allow more flexible deposit rates. The ECB said it began buying asset-backed securities Friday, expanding its quantitative easing regimen. Before that, Draghi said the ECB will do what it “must to raise inflation and inflation expectations as fast as possible,” at a banking conference in Frankfurt. The comments, which resembled his famous 2012 comment that he;d do “whatever” was needed, were taken as a sign the ECB will step-up asset buying.
