Post No. 2,919 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 17687.82 up 40.07 or 0.23% from Monday's close of 17647.75. Of the Dow components 20 gained and 10 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $2.24 and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up 1.78%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM down $2.27 and percentage-wise was Home Depot down 2.09%.
As of the open of the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.77 up from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.57 (last year it was 16.41). Tuesday's P/E estimate is 15.52 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 15.52 (year ago it was 15.02) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.17 down from Monday's dividend yield of 2.41 (last year it was 2.06). The Dow's all-time high was 17687.82 on November 18, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2754.27 up 6.23 from Monday's numerator of 2748.04. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.81 up 21 cents from Monday's average closing price of $91.60. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.73 (AXP/XOM) down 3 cents from Monday's median closing price of $92.76 (DIS/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was GE.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $623 ($275,427 - $274,804.
11/18/14 Tues. 4:37 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Barbara Kollmeyer says
After a five-day spell when the S&P 500 moved by less than 0.1% amid low volumes, Tuesday’s lively, trading action amounted to a relative rally for U.S. stocks. The benchmark S&P 500 SPX, +0.51% rose 10.48 points, or 0.5% to close at an all-time high of 2,051.80, marking the 43rd time the index closed in record territory this year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.23% added 40 points, or 0.2%, to close at a record level of 17,687.82. The Dow has closed at record levels 26 times so far this year. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.67% outperformed other benchmarks, gaining 31.44 points, or 0.7%, to 4,702.44.Upbeat housing data, as well as news of a snap election in Japan and better-than-expected data from Germany might have contributed to the micro-rally. But overall optimism is also supported by the fact that global central banks remain highly accommodative, providing liquidity and keeping key interest rates low. Fawad Razaqzada, technical analyst at FOREX.com, in emailed comments, wrote that investors’ insatiable appetite for equities is understandable to some degree because yields are universally so low. “Although the Federal Reserve has ended its quantitative easing program, some of the other major central banks have expanded theirs, or at least promised to do so if and when needed,” Razaqzada wrote. In economic news, a gauge of confidence among home builders rebounded this month, led by more optimism over present and upcoming sales of single-family homes, according to data released Tuesday.Separately, U.S. producer prices rose unexpectedly, in October, largely because of a spike in an erratic category that measures profit margins for wholesalers and retailers. Outside of the U.S., as expected, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced plans to call a snap election and to delay a planned sales-tax hike by 18 months, after data showed Monday the country fell into a recession. A survey from ZEW showed improved German sentiment on the economy — a sign the country’s fortunes may be turning around, the ZEW institute said.Running out of steam: The U.S. stock market remains on course to “run deep into bubble territory” before crashing, wrote Jeremy Grantham, co-founder and chief investment strategist of Grantham Mayo van Otterloo, in a quarterly newsletter released Monday. He said bubble territory starts at 2,250 on the S&P 500, roughly another 10% gain from here. Also see: A turning point for the S&P?Billionaire investor Carl Icahn told a Reuters conference on Monday that he’s also worried about a market selloff, though not for the next three to five years. Mislav Matejka, strategist at J.P. Morgan Cazenove, said in a note dated Monday it has switched to overweight on the eurozone and cut U.S. equity exposure to underweight. Among the reasons: The eurozone has underperformed sharply, and valuations are improving versus the U.S. Stocks to watch: Biotechnology stocks surged on Tuesday. Shares in Actavis Plc ACT, +8.74% continued to rise, adding 8.7%, after the company on Monday said it will buy Allergan Inc. in deal that values the Botox maker at roughly $66 billion.Urban Outfitters Inc. URBN, -0.02% slumped 6.6% after the company reported its third-quarter earnings fell to $47.1 million, or 35 cents a share.Home Depot Inc. HD, -2.09% HD, -2.09% HD, -2.09% shared fell 2.1%, after the company reaffirmed fiscal-year 2014 guidance and announced earnings per share of $1.15 in the third quarter. Gold jumps as dollar falls: The news from Japan’s Abe weighed on the dollar USDJPY, +0.19% versus the yen, which sent gold GCZ4, +1.06% prices higher by more than 1%.The Nikkei 225 index NIK, +2.18% rebounded 2.2% ahead of the announcements from Japan’s Prime Minister. European stocks SXXP, +0.61% and the euro EURUSD, +0.69% rose after ZEW report. Oil prices CLZ4, -1.89% were little changed.

11/17/14 Mon. 4:37 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Carla Mozee says After flipping between small gains and losses in a choppy trading day, U.S. stocks ended fractionally higher. A small gain on the S&P 500, however, was enough to push the index to a record close, its 42nd this year. Stocks were under pressure in the morning trade following news that Japan fell into recession and less-than-stellar manufacturing data in the U.S. Comments from European Central Bank president Mario Draghi, who said that the ECB would be open to buying government bonds, if needed, buoyed U.S. stocks in afternoon trade before pulling back somewhat. Overall, U.S. stocks seemed hesitant to make a break-out move in either direction. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.07% added 1.5 points to 2,041.43, new record close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.07% hovered near record levels, but closed just below it after adding 13 points, or 0.1%, to 17,647.75. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.37% finished the day down 17.5 points, or 0.4%, at 4,671.00Economic data: The Empire State manufacturing index, the first of the many regional manufacturing gauges to be released, rebounded slightly in November, but is still well below September levels, indicating a downshift in activity. Separately, industrial production fell unexpectedly in October, the second drop in the last three months, the Federal Reserve said Monday. In a sign that falling oil prices are beginning to effect the energy industry, oil and gas well drilling fell for the first time since February. Meanwhile, Japan’s real gross domestic product shrank 1.6% in the third quarter, contributing to the decline was companies cutting inventories and subdued capital investment. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had, on average, been looking for the economy to expand by 2.25%. Stocks to watch: Baker Hughes Inc. BHI, +8.92% shares surged 8.9% after Halliburton Co. HAL, -10.62% agreed to purchase its rival oil-services provider in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $34.6 billion. The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2015. Halliburton shares fell 11%.Tyson Foods Inc. TSN, +5.83% shares climbed 5.8% as the meat producer said quarterly sales rose 14%.Botox maker Allergan Inc. AGN, +5.31% neared a deal to be acquired by Actavis PLC ACT, +1.71% according to The Wall Street Journal. Allergan prices jumped 5.3%, and Actavis shares rose 1.7%.Hasbro Inc. HAS, +4.35% shares rose 4.4% as merger talks between the Transformers toy maker and DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. DWA, -14.26% fell through, according to reports. Other markets: Japanese stocks sank after the GDP report, leaving the Nikkei Stock Average NIK, -2.96% down 3%. The Japanese yen, meanwhile, slid to a seven-year low against the U.S. dollar USDJPY, +0.09% but recovered somewhat allowing the dollar to buy more than ¥116. The country’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he will decide on whether to move forward with a planned sales-tax increase following analysis of the situation, according to media reports Monday. Abe may also call for a snap election to be held next month. “The stock market and currency could remain volatile until Mr. Abe confirms his intentions. There is, of course, the prospect of further economic stimulus as well,” said Richard Troue, head of investment analysis, at Hargreaves Lansdown, in a Monday note.
December crude-oil futures CLZ4, -0.49% fell 0.9%, resuming a run of losses. European stocks SXXP, +0.48% closed higher after Mario Draghi comments on potential purchases of government bonds. Gold futures GCX4, -0.19% were flat at about $1,185.7 an ounce.
