Post No. 2,909 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Sept. 24, 2014.
A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 17484.53 up 100.69 or 0.58% from Tuesday's close of 17383.84. For the year the Dow is up 5.48%. Of the Dow components 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Visa up $6.56 or 2.7% %. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Boeing down $1.62 and percentage-wise was Intel down 1.62%.
WSJ pC1 "US stocks climb to ne whighs after vote" by Saumya Vaishampayan says US stocks soared to new highs after Republicans rode midterm election gains to control of both houses of Congress.
IBD pB3 "IBD 50, leaders cool off; S&P 500 drives upside" by David Saito-Chung says Wednesday's action saw mixed finish in flat trade while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.
NYT pB8 "Election and oil rebound spur market" by AP says stocks returned to nominal highs Wed due to increase in oil prices & Republicans take over of Congress.
FT p23 "Wall street" by Mamta Badkar, Eric Platt says US stocks gained Wed after the republican party seized Senate and took control of Congress.
As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.54 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.52 (last year it was 16.17). Thursday's P/E estimate is 15.34 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 15.34 (year ago it was 14.70) and Thursday's dividend yield is 2.18 unchanged from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.18 (last year it was 2.09). The Dow's all-time high was 17484.53 on November 5, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2722.62 up 15.68 from Tuesday's numerator of 2706.94. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.75 up 52 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of $90.23. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.53 (AXP/MCD) up 95 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $92.58 (DIS/AXP). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Intel.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,568 ($272,262 - $270,694).
11/5/14 Wed. 4:04 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at fresh record levels on Wednesday, as upbeat report on the labor market as well as midterm election results that left Republicans with a Senate majority boosted prices. The Dow industrials hit fresh records in tandem with the Dow transports and Dow utilities. A rare occurrence, dubbed Dow Trifecta has happened only 26 times in the history of the averages. The last time this happened was on April 25, 2007, according to FactSet. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.57% rose 11.43 points, or 0.6%, to 2,023.53. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.58% jumped 100.69 points, or 0.6%, to 17,484.53. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.06% lagged the main benchmarks and closed down 2.91 points or 0.1%, at 4,620.72.
