Post No. 2,956 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17280.83 down 315.51 or 1.79% from Thursday's close of 17596.34. For the week the Dow was down 677.96 or 3.78% from last Friday's close of 17958.79. For the year the Dow is up 4.2%. Of the Dow components all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs down $4.72 and percentage-wise was IBD down 3.53%.
IBD pB8 "Bears clobber stocks; institutional selling rises" by Paul Whitfield says stock indexes staggered to big losses in rising vol Friday as the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.71 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.65 (last year it was 16.18). Monday's P/E estimate is 15.48 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.75 (year ago it was 14.98) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.27 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.17 (last year it was 2.20). The Dow's all-time high was 17958.79 on December 5, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2690.90 down 49.13 from Thursday's numerator of 2740.03. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.70 down $1.63 from Thursday's average closing price of $91.33. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.56 (CAT/MCD) down 52 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $91.08 (PG/DIS). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $4,913 ($273,019 - $269,909).
12/12/14 Fri. 5:06 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks were pummeled Friday as investors , rattled by concerns about the health of the global economy, fueled tripled-digit losses in blue-chip stocks. The S&P 500 ended the week with the biggest loss in two-and-a-half years, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded its biggest weekly decline since Sep 2011.This week’s jarring selloff came on the heels of seven straight weeks of gains, was closely linked to the precipitous fall in oil prices, sending a measure of volatility, the VIX, to its highest level since Oct 17.The CBOE Volatility Index VIX, +4.98% also known as the “Wall Street’s fear gauge,” topped 21 on Friday. Crude oil futures dropped more than 10% over the past week as global supply continued to outstrip demand, while International Energy Agency cut its forecast for global demand yet again.Investors grew increasingly concerned that the global economy might be succumbing to deflation, a consistent decline in prices that leads to recessions and depressions. Traders also blamed unwinding of positions at the end of the year for big declines in the market.Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones pointed out that over time, lower oil prices are one of the best ways to boost global growth, but until prices stabilize volatility in the market will persist. The S&P 500 SPX, -1.62% closed 33 points, or 1.6%, lower at 2,002.33 and lost 3.5% over the week. Energy and materials sectors were the biggest decliners over the week, while telecoms also fell out of favor of late. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -1.79% dropped 315.51 points, or 1.8%, to 17,280.83 and recorded a weekly loss of 3.8%. Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.16% ended the day 54.57 points, or 1.2%, lower at 4,653.60 and declined 2.9% over the week. Channing Smith, managing director at Capital Advisors, said that investors are realizing that a decline in oil prices is not only due to supply issues but demand issues.
