Post No. 2,966 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 20 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 12/20.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily; the combined Saturday/Sunday issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & Financial Times; & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17804.80 up 26.65 or 0.15% from Thursday's close of 17778.15. For the week the Dow was up 523.97 or 3.03% from last Friday's close of 17280.83. For the year the Dow is up 7.4%. Of the Dow components 18 gained and 12 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was and percentage-wise was Chevron up $3.90 or 3.85%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Verizon down $2.49 and percentage-wise was Verizon down 2.31%.
WSJ pB5 "Stocks close week with another ruse" by Saumya Vaishampayan says US stocks closed outa wild week with a rally fueled by expectations that monetary policy will remain easy among major central banks for the foreseeable future.
Sat. NYT pB6 "Rally continues as oil companies lift market" by AP says oil and gas firms led the market up on Friday helping the S&P notch its second best week this year.
IBD pB9 "Stocks climb modestly; bulls need clearer signal" by Paul Whitfield says Friday's action was up in rising volume while the current outllo is market in correction.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.64 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.22 (last year it was 16.54). Monday's P/E estimate is 15.71 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.48 (year ago it was 15.01) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.19 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.24 (last year it was 2.13). The Dow's all-time high was 17958.79 on December 5, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2772.49 up 415 from Thursday's numerator of 2768.34. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.42 up 14 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $92.28. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.90 (DIS/AXP) up 60 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $92.30 (PG/DIS). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was GE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $415 ($277,249 - $276,834).
12/19/14 Fri. 4:11 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says the U.S. stock market ended a turbulent week with the biggest weekly gain since October. Stocks rose for three straight session in the wake of the Federal Reserve's reassurance that the rate increases would be slow and measured, while the central bank said it would be "patient" on the timing of the initial hike. Calmer currencies and commodities markets provided reasons to bid up prices, especially in the beaten-down energy and materials sectors. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.46% closed 9.44 points, or 0.5%, higher at 2,070.67, only 5 points off its record closing level. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.15% added 26.65 points, or 0.2%, to 17,804.80. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.36% ended the day with a gain of 16.98 points, or 0.4%, at 4,765.38.
