Post No. 2,965 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Friday at 17804.80 up 26.65 or 0.15%  from Thursday's close of 17778.15. For the week the Dow is up 523.97 or 3.03% from last Friday's close of 17280.83.  Of the Dow components 18  gained and 12  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  and percentage-wise was  Chevron up $3.90 or 3.85%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Verizon down $2.49 and percentage-wise was  Verizon down 2.31%.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.22 up from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 15.95  (last year it was 16.54).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.48 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.48 (year ago it was 14.98) and today's dividend yield is 2.24 down from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.28  (last year it was 2.12). The Dow's all-time high was 17958.79 on December 5,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2772.49 up 415  from  Thursday's   numerator of 2768.34.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.42 up 14 cents from Thursday's  average closing price of $92.28.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.90  (DIS/AXP) up 60 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $92.30 (PG/DIS). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $415 ($277,249 - $276,834).

12/19/14 Fri. 4:11 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says   the U.S. stock market ended a turbulent week with the biggest weekly gain since October. Stocks rose for three straight session in the wake of the Federal Reserve's reassurance that the rate increases would be slow and measured, while the central bank said it would be "patient" on the timing of the initial hike. Calmer currencies and commodities markets provided reasons to bid up prices, especially in the beaten-down energy and materials sectors. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.46% closed 9.44 points, or 0.5%, higher at 2,070.67, only 5 points off its record closing level. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.15% added 26.65 points, or 0.2%, to 17,804.80. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.36% ended the day with a gain of 16.98 points, or 0.4%, at 4,765.38.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Thursday at 17778.15 up 421.28 or 2.43%  from Wednesday's close of 17356.87. For the year the Dow is up 7.2%.  Of the Dow components all 30  gained and 0  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $5.75  and percentage-wise was  Microsoft up 3.89%.

NYT pB3 "For a second day, Fed comments send shares soaring" by Peter Eavis says soothing words re: interest rates sent stocks higher.  Not since March '09 have there been back to back 2% moves.

FT p21 "Wall street" by Richard Blackden, Pan Yuk says gains in the tech sector and a steadying of the energy industry pushed the S&P up 1.4%.

IBD pB3 "Stocks soar more than 2% as post-Fed rally goes on" by Paul Whitfield says stocks gapped up at the open Thurs as Thursday's action was up in lower vol & the current outlook is market in correction.

12/18/14 Thurs. 4:08 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova say  the U.S. stock market surged on Thursday, with the main indexes recording their best one-day gains in years, as investors continued to cheer the Federal Reserve's accomodative approach to monetary policy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 421 points, or 2.4%, to 17,778.15, a day after the Federal Reserve said it "can be patient" about the timing of its first rate hike, signaling increases will be slow and steady. It was the first time in more than six years that the Dow recorded two consecutive days of gains exceeding 200 points. The S&P 500 SPX, +2.40% jumped 48.34 points, or 2.4%, to 2,061.23, it's biggest one-day gain in nearly two years. Technology and healthcare sectors led the gains, while all ten main sectors ended the session with solid gains. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +2.24% ended the day with a gain of 104 points, or 2.2%, at 4,748.
