Post No. 2,969 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  as of Dec. 20 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 12/20.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 17959.44 up 154.64 or 0.87%  from Friday's close of 17804.80. Of the Dow components 27  gained and 3  declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $.293  and percentage-wise was  Intel up 2.31%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was  Chevron down 90 cents and percentage-wise was  Merck down 1.04%.

As of the open of  the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Monday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.64 up from Friday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.22  (last year it was 16.54).  Monday's P/E estimate is 15.71 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.48 (year ago it was 15.01) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.19 down from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.24  (last year it was 2.13). The Dow's all-time high was 17959.44 on December 22,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2796.57 up 24.08  from  Friday's   numerator of 2772.49.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.22 up 80 cents from Friday's  average closing price of $92.42.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.48  (XOM/AXP) up 48 cents from Friday's median closing price of $92.90 (DIS/AXP). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $2,408 ($279,657 - $277,249).

12/22/14 Mon. 4:41 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sarah Sjolin says  the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average ended Monday at new records, fueled by continued hopes that the Federal Reserve won’t be in a rush to raise interest rates. The main indexes booked their fourth straight day of gains, abetted by a central bank that last week reassured investors it will be “patient” about the timing and pace of rate hikes. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.38%  gained 7.9 points, or 0.4%, to 2,078.55, closing at a record for the 50th time this year. This is the highest number of record closes in a year since 1995. Gains in technology and telecom stocks outweighed sharp losses in energy and health-care companies. Gains were even larger for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.87% which rose 154.64 points, or 0.9%, to 17,959.44. The blue-chip index closed at a record for the 35th time in 2014. All but three of its 30 components ended with gains. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.34%  ended 16 points, or 0.3%, higher at 4,781.42.“There seems to be an overall upward bias, but something rational is happening to the stocks. Trading action is not at all uniform, which is a good sign, as companies are being valued for their fundamentals,” said Kim Caughey Forrest, senior analyst and portfolio manager at Fort Pitt Capital Group. Market reaction to mixed economic data was largely muted. Sales of existing homes in November slowed down to the weakest pace in six months, in a further sign that the housing market remains fragile. Separately, a report on economic growth from the Chicago Fed came in stronger than expected. Michael Arone, chief investment officer at State Street Global Advisors, said years of low interest rates are beginning to benefit consumers, with the fall in energy prices leaving many Americans with extra cash.“The exciting news is that we are seeing signs of wage growth along with strong labor market, which is great news for consumers. And revival on Main Street will be good for Wall Street,” Arone said.Oil prices reversed gains after a firmer start in the global day. Crude oil CLG5, -3.06%   settled $1.75, or 3%, lower at $55.30 a barrel, while Brent oil LCOG5, -2.04%  settled slightly above $60 a barrel.
Oil-related stocks sagged, tracking crude prices closely: shares of Nabors Industries Ltd NBR, -3.89% and Chesapeake Energy Corp CHK, -7.25%  fell nearly 7.5 and 4% respectively.

12/19/14 Fri. 4:11 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says   the U.S. stock market ended a turbulent week with the biggest weekly gain since October. Stocks rose for three straight session in the wake of the Federal Reserve's reassurance that the rate increases would be slow and measured, while the central bank said it would be "patient" on the timing of the initial hike. Calmer currencies and commodities markets provided reasons to bid up prices, especially in the beaten-down energy and materials sectors. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.46% closed 9.44 points, or 0.5%, higher at 2,070.67, only 5 points off its record closing level. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.15% added 26.65 points, or 0.2%, to 17,804.80. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.36% ended the day with a gain of 16.98 points, or 0.4%, at 4,765.38.
