Post No. 2,979 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Dec. 20 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 12/20.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Investor's Business Daily, Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 18053.71 up 23.5 or 0.13% from Wednesday's close of 18030.21. For the year the Dow is up 8.9%. Of the Dow components 22 gained and 8 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was McDonald's up 95 cents or 1.01%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Visa down $1.01and percentage-wise was Exxon down 0.61%.
IBD pB8 "Stock indexes amble higher, but quality leadership is absent" by Paul Whitfield says stocks danced to a slow beat Friday, rising in quiet post holiday vol as the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio was 16.95 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.85 (last year it was 16.81). Monday's P/E estimate was 15.93 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 15.71 (year ago it was 15.25) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.40 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.16 (last year it was 2.07). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2811.25 up 3.66 from Wednesday's numerator of 2807.59. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.71 up 12 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of $93.59. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $94.26 (CAT/AXP) up 46 cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $93.80 (XOM/MCD). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was GE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $366 ($281,125 - $280,759).
12/26/14 Fri. 4:39 pm MarketWatch by Joseph Andinolfi & Barbara Kollmeyer says Santa continued to shower gifts on stock-market investors, as the S&P 500 index and the Dow Jones Industrial Average once again closed at record levels. The Nasdaq Composite closed at its highest level since March 2000. The Dow industrials DJIA, +0.13% closed 23 points, or 0.1%, higher at 18,053, their 38th record close of the year, while the S&P 500 SPH5, +0.09% gained 6.89 points, or 0.3%, to 2,088.7, its 52nd record close. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.70% gained 33.39 points, or 0.7%, to close at 4,806.8. The Dow has gained for seven consecutive trading days, and enjoyed its biggest seven-day point gain since Nov. 4, 2008. The Nasdaq has been up for eight of the last ten weeks, while the S&P 500 has gained for nine of the past ten weeks. However, volumes for all three major indexes were the lowest for the year so far. Naeem Aslam, chief market analyst at AvaTrade, said he expects the stock market’s typical end-of-year rally to continue through next week, as the only important piece of U.S. economic data expected is the weekly jobless claims report on Wednesday. Aslam added that low trading volume will likely help U.S. stocks to continue moving higher. Friday’s records come after markets were closed Thursday for Christmas. On Wednesday, the Dow eked out its 37th record close this year in a shortened Christmas Eve session, ending at 18,030.21, after closing above 18,000 for the first time on Tuesday. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.33% halted a five-day winning streak that had brought it to a record as well, as it lost less than a point to close at 2,081.88 Wednesday. The Dow industrials had the best five-day run before Christmas since 1991, while for the past five trading days of the year, the index is been up 93 times in 117 years, or around 79% of the time. Analysts also said the Dow trading above 18,000 as 2014 closes is an encouraging sign, even as some expect stocks are expected to dip in the New Year. Also see: Santa rally may be deterred by these three factors. European markets are closed until Monday. Asia stocks ADOW, +0.74% mostly rose, with a 2.8% gain for the Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, +2.77% led by banks. In other markets, the dollar USDJPY, +0.12% held steady above ¥120, while gold prices GCG5, +0.01% finished the week slightly lower, but gained $22.10 Friday, rising to $1,196.30 an ounce. Crude-oil prices CLG5, +1.21% gave up early gains, as West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery fell 2% to $54.73 a barrel, while Brent crude LCOG5, +0.84% futures lost 79 cents, or 1.3%, to close at $59.45. Both are the second-lowest settlement levels of this year, after ones set last week. Chris Faulkner, the chief executive of Breitling Energy, said he believes the “panic button” for Saudi Arabia to cut production is $40 a barrel.
