Post No. 3,061 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 17985.77 down 44.08 or 0.24% from Wednesday's close of 18029.85. For the year the Dow is up 0.91%. Of the Dow components 10  gained   and 20   declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Boeing up $2.58 or 1.71%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Walmart down $2.77 or 1.71%.

WSJ pC4 "Blue chips slip; tech lifts Nasdaq" by Dan Strumpf says the Dow & S&P edged lower in quiet trading as energy shares slipped, but tech stocks continued their winning ways.  Chevron fell $2.09 and Exxon fell $1.57.

NYT pB5 "Markets fall on slide in utility companies" & AJC pA11 "Utilities drag stocks lower" by AP say US stocks closed slightly lower Thurs as a slide in utility companies weighed on the market.

FT p21 "Wall street" by Eric Platt says US equities were little changed as better than expected initial jobless claims were offset by the slide in oil prices.  ExxonMobil declined 2%.

IBD pB3 "Stock indexes end mixed but restaurants heat up" by Paul Whitfield says Thursday's action was mixed in lower volume while the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.93 down  from yesterday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.96 (last year it was 15.83).  Today's P/E estimate is 16.73 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 16.73 (year ago it was 14.25) and  today's dividend yield is 2.45 down from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.46  (last year it was 2.19). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2800.67 down 6.81 from  Wednesday's   numerator of 2807.48.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.36 down 22 cents  from Wednesday's  average closing price of $93.58.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.33  (PG/XOM) down 36 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $88.65 (WMT/XOM).  The lowest volume was V  and the highest volume was GE.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $681  ($280,748 - $280,067).

2/19/15 Thur. 4:24 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Sarah Sjolin says U.S. stocks ended Thursday’s thinly-traded session mostly lower, as investors grappled with a drop in oil prices and a continued impasse between Greece and its creditors over loans. Meanwhile, mixed economic reports stoked uncertainty about the Federal Reserve’s timetable for hiking rates. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.11%  ended 2.23 points, or 0.1%, lower at 2,097.45, with six of its 10 main sectors closing lower. Technology and consumer discretionary stocks led the gains, while utilities and telecoms stocks saw biggest declines. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.24%  dropped 44.08 points, or 0.2%, to 17,985.77, with two thirds of its 30 members finishing with losses. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc was the biggest decliner among the blue-chips. The Russell 2000 RUT, +0.00%  ended flat at 1,227.74, breaking a four-day winning streak. The index of small companies set an intraday record earlier, but failed to close at a fresh high.Meanwhile, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.37%  defied the general trend and closed 18.34 points, or 0.4%, higher at 4,924.70, closing higher for the seventh consecutive day.Kim Forrest, senior investment strategist at Fort Pitt Capital, said the oil price appreciation over the past few weeks was likely unwarranted.“There were no fundamental reasons for oil to recover from $43 to $53 a barrel, so I would argue that that was due to short-covering trades. So, when investors realize that there is a lot of oil stored, prices got hit again,” Forrest said. “Weak opening on Wall Street is not surprising, as we have been getting a lot of weak data, despite strong unemployment figures. But as interest rates and inflation keep falling, multiples keep rising. The trend lately has been that stocks open weaker and rise towards the end,” she said. Forrest also cautioned that disinflation, which is primarily due to the oil plunge, is temporary.
“Just as disinflation is temporary, multiple expansion is temporary and when stocks get too expensive they have a tendency to drop dramatically,” she said.Oil blues: Energy companies and oil-related funds were hit, as crude-oil prices CLH5, -1.23%  fell nearly 2%, settling at $51.16 a barrel. Among oil-tracking indexes, the iPath Goldman Sachs Crude Oil Total Return Index ETN OIL, +0.26%  fell 1.1%, and the Velocity Shares 3X Long Crude ETN UWTI, +1.17%  slumped 2.3%.
