Post No. 3,037 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Feb. 1  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of Feb. 1.

A  read of the print editions of  Thursday's Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. -carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 17673.02 up 6.62 or 0.04%  from Tuesday's close of 17666.40. For the year the Dow is 0.84%. Of the Dow components 13  gained   and 17  declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Disney up $7.18 or 7.63%.  The  biggest decliners dollar-wise were Caterpillar and Merck down $1.97  and percentage-wise was Merck down 3.23%.

NYT pB10 "A meandering market ends mostly lower" & AJC pA11 "Stocks fade late over EU worries" says the market sagged in the final half hour of trading wed after Europe's central bank withdrew a key fin'l support for Greek banks.

IBD pb3 "Nasdaq falls, barely adds distribution; IbD 50 rises" by David Saito-Chung says Wednesday's action was a modest drop, mixed trade while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.  Boeing's and Walt Disney's shares were an unmistakable sign of institutional investors putting cash to work.

FT p21 "Wall street" by Mamta Badkar says Disney advanced 8% after it topped fiscal 1Q earnings and sales estimates, driven by sales of consumer products and home entertainment related to its '13 hit Frozen.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Thursday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.95 up  from Wednesday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.95 (last year it was 14.95).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.83 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 15.83 (year ago it was 14.15) and  today's dividend yield is 2.47 down from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.47  (last year it was 2.23). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2751.97 up 1.03  from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2750.94.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.73 up 3 cents  from Tuesday's  average closing price of $91.70.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.06  (WMT/XOM) down 16 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $89.22 (WMT/XOM.  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $103  ($275,197 - $275,094).

2/4/15 Wed. 4:33 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
just when U.S. stocks were rebounding, late-day news that the European Central Bank is rejecting Greek bonds as collateral sent stocks south, with the S&P 500 finishing lower on Wednesday.
The news suggests that the ECB may be ready to play hardball with the newly installed Greek government led by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who, along with Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, has been trying to renegotiate the stringent terms of its bailout. The Greek news, announced just before the close of U.S. markets, knocked stocks back on their heels as equities had been gathering momentum despite data that showed oil inventories have been climbing, while economic data on the labor market and nonmanufacturing sector came in lackluster. Oil’s jarring drop — a decline of nearly 9% on Wednesday — sent energy stocks sharply lower, but gains in consumer discretionary and technology stocks had begun to gather steam until the ECB move. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.42%  fell 8.52 points, or 0.4%, to 2,041.51, plunging during the last 15 minutes of the session. Energy, utilities and health-care stocks led the losses, while six of 10 main sectors ended with losses. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.04%   climbed more than 110 points, but ended marginally higher, up 6 points at 17,673.02. The Dow’s biggest gainer was Walt Disney Company, which jumped 7.6% to hit an intraday high, keeping the index in the green. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.23%  switched between small gains and losses but ended the session 11 points, or 0.2%, lower at 4,716.70.After a four-day rally, which sent oil price up more than 20% oil prices fell sharply Wednesday, with March WTI crude CLH5, +0.89%  dropping nearly 9% to settle at $48.45 a barrel.David Kelly, chief global strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds, attributed Wednesday’s pullback to a big run-up over the past few days.“The intraday correlation between oil and stock prices is due to the power of short-term traders and central bank liquidity,” Kelly said. Speaking about commodities and currencies and their impact on equities, Kelly stressed that these asset classes tend to overshoot in both directions.
