Post No. 3,040 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Feb. 1  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of Feb. 1.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17824.29 down 60.59 or 0.34%  from Thursday's close of 17884.88. For the week the Dow was up 659.34 or 3.84%. Of the Dow components  11 gained   and  19 declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $2.66 and percentage-wise was Verizon up 3.07%. The  biggest decliner dollar-wise was Visa down $4.38 and percentage-wise was Intel down 1.9%.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.85 down  from Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.92 (last year it was 15.10).  Today's P/E estimate is 15.83 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.83 (year ago it was 14.15) and  today's dividend yield is 2.46 down from  yesterday's dividend yield of 2.47  (last year it was 2.23). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2775.53 down 9.43 from  Thursday's   numerator of 2784.96.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.52 down 31 cents  from Thursday's  average closing price of $92.83.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.42  (WMT/XOM) down 40  cents from Thursday's median closing price of $89.82 (WMT/XOM.  The lowest volume was  3M and the highest volume was Verizon.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $943  ($278,496  - $277,533).

2/6/15 Fri. 4:46 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks finished lower Friday as investors shrugged off a strong jobs report, which had provided a lift earlier in the day, and turned to fresh concerns about Greece. The worries were sparked midday Friday after Standard & Poor’s downgraded the country’s long-term sovereign-debt rating to B-minus from B. In addition, a euro zone official said Greece faces a Feb. 16 deadline to apply for an extension of its bailout program. The main indexes still booked solid weekly gains, however. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.34%  fell 7.05 points, or 0.3%, to close at 2,055.47 on Friday, according to preliminary FactSet data. That left the benchmark up 3% for the week, representing its largest weekly gain since mid-December, though it’s down 0.2% for the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.34%  dropped 60.59 points, or 0.3%, to close at 17,824.29 on Friday. That put the blue-chip barometer up 3.8% for the week — its biggest weekly percentage gain since January 2013 — and essentially flat for the year. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.43%  slid 20.70 points, or 0.4%, to end at 4,744.40. The tech-heavy index added 2.4% for the week, and it’s up 0.2% in 2015 to date.JJ Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade, said that Friday’s reversal in prices fit with a trend of taking risk off the table on Friday afternoons.“We’ve had good rallies this week, and investors simply do not want to hold long positions going into the weekend. And news of Greece became a good trigger point to start selling,” he added. Brian Fenske,  head of sales trading at ITG, a New York-based brokerage firm, said the downgrade of Greece caught traders off-guard.“People have been ignoring negative news about Greece this week, and today’s downgrade is a delayed reaction that further problems with Green can destabilize the euro,” Fenske said.“There is also concern that the market is toppy. A lot of fundamental investors are afraid to buy stocks when earnings estimates have come down,” Fenske added. The main focus earlier was on the key monthly jobs report, which came in far stronger than expected. The Labor Department report showed that the economy added 257,000 jobs in January, while November and December numbers were revised sharply higher. In another good sign, hourly wages jumped 0.5%. Although the unemployment rate ticked up to 5.7% from 5.6%, it suggests that more people are entering the workforce. The U.S. economy has added more than 200,000 jobs for 12 straight months.

Of the Dow components  all 30 gained   and   none declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise Visa up $6.91and percentage-wise was DuPont up 3.06%.

FT p19 "Wall St" by Eric Platt, Mamta Badkar says US stocks were led higher by rising oil prices which lifted the energy and materials sectors

2/5/15 Thurs. 4:50 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says U.S. stocks recorded solid gains on Thursday, buoyed by a rebound in oil prices, deal news and upbeat quarterly earnings, pushing the S&P 500 and Dow industrials into positive territory for the year. A more than 4% jump in oil prices sent energy and materials sharply higher, while news that Pfizer plans to buy Hospira Inc. for about $16 billion lifted health-care sector stocks.
Better-than-expected earnings from companies, such as O’Reilly Automotive Inc. and Estée Lauder Cos. added to confidence. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.03%  closed 21 points, or 1%, higher at 2,062.50, with broad-based gains across all 10 main sectors. Some analysts pointed out that Friday’s move on the index will prove important, if it breaks through a key January resistance level of 2,064.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.20% jumped 212 points, or 1.2%, to 17,885, with all of its 30 components ending higher. Drug giant Pfizer led gains. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.03%  ended the day up 48 points, or 1%, at 4,765. Biotechnology stocks rose sharply, with the iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology ETF gaining 2.4%.Investors seemed to have momentarily dismissed Greek concerns, with the latest development being the European Central Bank’s decision to no longer accept Greek bonds as collateral. They also shrugged off a batch of mixed economic data. Weekly jobless claims came in stronger than expected, setting an optimistic tone for the key jobs report due on Friday. However, productivity in the fourth quarter shrank by a 1.8% annual pace. The trade deficit soared to a two-year high in December, mostly due to temporary oil-related shifts. Gene Peroni, Jr., portfolio manager at Advisors Asset Management, said the stock market is focusing on better-than-expected earnings.“We are seeing that growth stocks are outperforming and that leadership in the market is encouraging and indicates that this bull market will rise further,” Peroni said. Peroni dismissed recent volatility and a weak performance in January. “Recent volatility is driven by hedge-fund activity, as seen by massive reallocation into growth stocks,” he added.
Carin Pai, portfolio manager at Fiduciary Trust, said stock markets are benefiting from oil prices stabilizing.
