Post No. 3,035 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of Feb. 1  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of Feb. 1.

A  read of the print editions of  Wednesday's Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. -carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 17666.40 up 305.36 or 1.76%  from Monday's close of 17361.04.  For the year the Dow is down 0.88%. Of the Dow components all 30  gained   and  none declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $4.75 and percentage-wise was Caterpillar up 3.81%.

WSJ pC1 "Stocks get lift from oil's bounce; major indexes rise more than 1%" by Alexandra Scaggs says a bounce in oil prices boosted US stocks for the 2nd straight day.  Also in addition to the turn in oil prices the US dollar & US gov bonds both fell.  Exxon and Chevron were among top dow performers.

NYT pB4 "Shares rise, buoyed by higher oil prices" & AJC pA13 "Auto help market rally" by AP says automakers were among the big winners in the rally due to reports of strong vehicle sales last month.

IBD pB5 "Higher volume, breadth fan stocks' sharp gains" by Juan Carlos Arancibia says the market surged due to a rebound in oil prices as the action saw indexes extend prior day's gains and the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

FT pB19 "AutoNation roars2 ahead after car sales accelerate in 4Q" by Mamta Badkar says oil extended its rally and the S&P was led higher by energy stocks.

As of the open of  the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.95 up  from Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.60 (last year it was 14.95).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 15.83 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 15.83 (year ago it was 14.15) and  Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.47 down from  Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.51  (last year it was 2.23). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2750.94 up 47.55  from  Monday's   numerator of 2703.39.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $91.70 up $1.59  from Monday's  average closing price of $90.11.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.22  (WMT/XOM) up $1.57 from Monday's median closing price of $87.65 (WMT/XOM.  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made  $4,755  ($275,094 - $270,339).

2/3/15 Tues. 4:31 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova  & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks rallied into the close for the second-straight session on Tuesday, sending Dow industrials rocketing more than 300 points, as equities kept pace with surging crude-oil prices. A 7% jump in crude oil futures delivered a fillip to energy shares, while upbeat monthly U.S. car sales, merger activity ad positive developments in Greece’s debt negotiations also boosted confidence. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.44%  closed 29.15 points, or 1.4%, higher at 2,050, with broad-based gains across all sectors. But energy stocks were the stars in Tuesdays trading, boosted by a big jump in oil prices. The mood on Wall Street was optimistic with cyclical stocks outperforming defensive sectors. Small-cap stocks rallied, with Russell 2,000 RUT, +1.83%   gaining 1.8% to 1,196.97. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.76%  gained 305.36 points, or 1.8%, to 17,666.40, with all of its 30 members ending in the green. The move represented the biggest gain in more than three weeks for the blue-chip index, and marked the sixth consecutive session of triple-digit moves. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.09%  ended the day up 51.05 points, or 1.1%, at 4,727.74.       Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital, said today’s trading was very much as ‘risk-on’ trade, when investors feel bullish about equities and other risky assets and shed haven assets, such as Treasurys and gold.“Over the past two days we’ve had good news from Greece and it seems like oil found a floor and stopped falling. With the majority of earnings beating expectations, it is not surprising to see stocks rallying,” Cardillo said.“The S&P 500 held above technical levels and we find that significant. We expect this rally to be sustained in February with somewhat diminished volatility,” he added. Martin Leclerc, chief investment officer and portfolio manager at Barrack Yard Advisors, attributed volatility that has whipsawed stocks to investors trying to figure out whether to be risky or risk averse in their investing strategies.“While indexes are relatively robust, individual stocks are not doing as well. There are more stocks that are down 10% than up 10%, for example. But that does not mean this bull market is about to end,” Leclerc said.“We expect markets to get more ‘speculatively’ higher before seeing a big correction, given there is still a lot of central bank liquidity,” he added.
