Post No. 3,245 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 17977.68 up 217.27 or 1.22% from Friday's close of 17760.41. Of the 30 Dow components 29 gained and only Merck declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs up $2.93 and percentage-wise was DuPont up 2.16%. The only and therefore biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Merck down 8 cents or 0.14%.

7/10/15 Fri. 4:29 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks rallied on Friday on renewed hopes that debt-laden Greece will reach a deal with its creditors this weekend and stave off an exit from the eurozone. A sharp rebound in Chinese stocks overnight, which trimmed some of the dramatic losses over the past month, also helped boost sentiment. The main indexes ended a volatile week, marked by wild swings in global equity and commodity markets as well as a 3 1/2 hour trading halt on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday, roughly where they started. The S&P 500 posted its biggest one-day gain in two months, but ended the week virtually flat. The benchmark index advanced 25.31 points, or 1.2%, to 2,076.62. Gains were broad-based, with all 10 main sectors trading higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average 211.79 points, or 1.2%, to 17,760.41 and eked out a 0.2% weekly gain. All 30 Dow components closed higher on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite rallied 75.30 points, or 1.5% to 4,997.70, but finished the week 0.2% lower.Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial, noted the U.S. stock market over the past few weeks had been driven by headlines. “When there is a vacuum and markets are waiting for corporate news, headlines grab attention. So, it is not surprising to see big swings after events in Greece or China that come ahead of the trading day in the U.S.,” Krosby said.“Earnings this season will be crucial. The Federal Reserve is about to start normalizing rates, whether it happens in September or December or early next year. At this point, fundamentals and future guidance need to be strong to support current valuations,” Krosby said.“Once the Fed begins raising interest rates, we will definitely find out just how much the market was driven by the Fed’s monetary policy and stimulus versus fundamentals,” she added. Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen, in a speech Friday, reiterated her expectation that a rate hike will be needed this year. Greek hopes: Sentiment on Greece turned upbeat Friday after the country’s government late Thursday submitted a new reform proposal, which appeared to be closer to creditors’ demands on some of the most divisive issues. The reform program is a prerequisite for a new bailout package, desperately needed for the Greece to avoid bankruptcy and a potential exit from the eurozone. Paul Christopher, global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, in a note to clients, warned of further volatility next week.“A deal to preserve Greece’s de facto eurozone membership can still happen, but, in our view, remains very difficult to achieve. An adverse market reaction could begin as soon as Monday, July 13,” Christopher wrote.
Greece’s banks and stock market will remain closed until at least Monday. The Global X FTSE Greece 20 ETF surged 9.2%, while European stock markets staged impressive rallies across the board. Cablevision Systems Corporation shares jumped 7.3%, making it the best performer on the S&P 500. Shares jumped after a news story in which French billionaire Patrick Drahi commented that he wanted to buy the cable company. Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. jumped 4%, adding to a gain on Thursday after the company beat earnings expectations.Shares of Apple Inc. climbed 2.7%, ending a five-sessions losing streak. Other markets: Treasurys sold off Friday, driving yields higher for a second trading day, as the Chinese stock market found some stability and the Greek debt saga seemed closer to a resolution.Oil futures settled 0.1% lower at $52.10 a barrel, booking a 7.4% drop over the week.Gold futures settled 0.1% lower at $1,157.90 an ounce, falling for a third straight week.
