by Dan Kolber

Post No. 3,257 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Friday's Wall Street Journal,   Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Thursday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at  17851.04 down 68.25 or 0.10% from Wednesday's close of 17731.92 down 119.12 or 0.67%. For the year the Dow is down 0.51%.  Of the 30   Dow components  4   gained, Travelers was unchanged and  15  declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise was  IBM up $1.38 and percentage-wise was Cisco up 1.74%.  The  biggest decliner dollar-wise   was Caterpillar down $2.88 and percentage-wise was 3M down 3.8%.

WSJ pC4 "Disappointing earnings dent Dow Industrials" by Dan Strump says the Dow slumped due to weak results from Caterpillar, American express and 3M.

NYT pB2 "Disappointing earnings and outlooks drag US shares down for third straight day" by AP says disappointing earnings and outlooks from several firms including American Express, Caterpillar & 3M brought US stocks lower.

FT p21 "Wall street" by Mamta Badkar says disappointing results weighed on US stocks.

IBD pB3 "Stocks begin up, end off; leaders leap after hours" by Paul Whitfield says Thursday's action was down in mixed trade while the current outlook is confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's  Wall St. Journal is 0.14967727343149.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.48 down from Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.52 (last year it was 16.53).  Friday's P/E estimate is 16.15  unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 16.15 (year ago it was 15.08) and  Friday's dividend yield is  2.39 up from Thursday's dividend yield of  2.35 (last year it was 2.15). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's closing Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2654.06 down 17.83 from Wednesday's closing average numerator of 2671.89.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14967727343149) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $5.08  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.47 down 59 cents  from Wednesday's closing average of $89.06.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $80.92 (PG/XOM) down 39 cents  from  Wednesday's median closing price of $81.31 (PG/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Thursday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,783  ($267,189 - $265,406).

7/23/15 Thurs. 4:40 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says weak earnings from industrial bellwethers such as Caterpillar, 3M and American Express weighed on Dow Jones Industrial Average, pushing the blue-chip index below a key technical level on Thursday. The selling pressure accelerated in the afternoon session and the main indexes closed with losses for the third straight day, led lower by utilities, materials and industrial stocks. A cautious mood on Wall Street was evident in the rise in havens such as Treasurys and a selloff in commodities like oil and gold.
Meanwhile, a report on jobless claims ahead of the opening bell offered support to the belief that the U.S. economy is on a solid footing — and left investors considering the timing of the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate hike. Weekly applications for unemployment benefits plunged to the lowest level since 1973, although economists warned that data in July tend to be volatile. Improving labor-market conditions offers more ammunition for those members of the Federal Reserve who have been pushing for higher rates.“The wider implication is that continued job growth will allow the Fed to start raising interest rates in September. We expect the Fed to implement four quarter-point hikes to get the interest rate to 1%, after which they will probably stop and see how the economy is doing,” said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors. The government uses this weekly number when calculating the month’s gains in monthly nonfarm payrolls, he said. That report, due Aug. 7, could show a gain of about 252,000.The S&P 500 SPX, -0.57%  lost 12 points, or 0.6%, to 2,102.15. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.67%  dropped 119.09 points, or 0.7%, to 17,731.92, turning negative for the year. The blue-chip index closed below its 200-day moving average, which technical analysts say is a bearish sign.Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.49%  fell 25.36 points, or 0.5%, to 5,146.41. Michael Antonelli, equity sales trader at R.W Baird & Co. referred to the stock market as being in a “great neutral.”“We are looking at the third failed break-out on the S&P 500 — the index is still stuck in the range, because investors are not overly bullish and not overly bearish. They are overwhelmingly ‘neutral’, Antonelli said, referring to the investor sentiment survey conducted by the American Association of Individual Investors.
“This is a great sideways market — in which every dip is still being bought. The market has no compelling reasons to march higher and no compelling reasons to pull back,” he added.
Earnings: General Motors Co. GM, -0.03% shares jumped 3.9% after the car maker posted sharply higher profit that topped expectations. Under Armour Inc. UA, +7.34% shares jumped 7.3% after the retailer raised its full-year revenue outlook. Shares in Caterpillar Inc. CAT, -3.61% and 3M MMM, +0.33%  fell 3.6% and 3.8% respectively, after companies’ earnings disappointed investors.
American Express Co. AXP, -2.51% dropped 2.5% after the credit-card company late Wednesday said its second-quarter earnings fell 3.7%.Shares of online retailer Amazon.com Inc. AMZN, +17.67%  rocked 18% in after-hours trade after the company announced a surprise profit rise when expectations were for a loss.  Anthem Inc. ANTM, +0.07%  shares inched 0.2% lower after The Wall Street Journal reported that the health-care company is nearing a deal to buy Cigna Corp. CI, +0.33%  for more than $48 billion. Cigna shares added 1.5%.  Other markets: European markets were mixed after Greece approved a second set of austerity measures, paving the way for official bailout talks to begin. It was also a mixed session in Asia, where Japanese and Chinese stocks moved higher, but India and Taiwan closed lower.  Gold prices GCQ5, -0.21% broke their 10-day losing streak and settled 0.2% higher at $1,094.10 an ounce. Oil futures CLU5, -0.67%  fell 1.5% to settled at $48.45 a barrel, its lowest level since March 31. The ICE dollar index DXY, -0.28%  fell 0.5% to 97.09.
