The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 17690.46 down 55.52 or 0.31% from Thursday's close of 17745.98. For the week the Dow is up 121.93 or 0.69% from last Friday's close of 17568.53. Of the 30 Dow components 15 gained and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $1.16 and percentage-wise was Coke up 1.28%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Chevron down $4.55 or 4.89%.
As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14967727343149. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 16.67 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.60 (last year it was 16.01). Today's P/E estimate is 15.91 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 15.91 (year ago it was 15.13) and today's dividend yield is 2.39 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.38 (last year it was 2.19). The Dow's all-time high was 18312.39 on May 19, 2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14967727343149) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $5.08 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.26 down 28 cents from Thursday's closing average of $88.54. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $78.92 (CAT/XOM) down $1.76 from Thursday's median closing price of $80.68 (CAT/XOM). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.

7/31/15 Fri. 4:06 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says U.S. stocks ended lower Friday, as weakness in the energy sector outweighed modest gains elsewhere. Earlier, a closely watched measure of employment costs decelerated in the second quarter, sparking hopes that the Federal Reserve may delay rate hikes this year. Analysts pointed out that weak wage growth is a symptom of slowing growth, which does not bode well for corporate earnings. The main indexes recorded modest weekly and monthly gains. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.23% closed 4.71 points, or 0.2%, lower at 2,103.90. The index ended July roughly at the same level it finished in May, erasing all of the previous month's losses. The weekly gain for the benchmark stood at 1.2%, while it booked a 2% gain over the month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.32% slipped 55.32 points, or 0.3%, to 17,690.66, but ended the week with a gains of 0.7% and booked a 0.4% gain over the month. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.01% ended the session less than a point lower at 5,218.28. The tech-heavy index rose 0.8% over the week and 2.9% over the month.

7/30/15 Thurs. 5:00 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks ended Thursday’s choppy session little changed after data showed the economy picked up its pace in the second quarter, leaving the Federal Reserve on track to raise interest rates as soon as September.
Trading action was marked by swings in either director as investors digested data showed that the U.S. economy expanded at an annualized 2.3% rate in the second quarter, while first-quarter growth was increased from negative 0.2% to 0.6%. The GDP report along with an employment report that indicated jobless claims rose last week after hitting a 40-year low but still remained near the lowest levels in decades, offered signs that the economy is on a healing path, albeit one considered slow by some measures. The improvement in the economic picture, albeit sluggish by some measures, may have fueled some of the uncertainty in trading Thursday. “If the Fed begins normalizing rates, it means they are confident the economy is doing well. Given the fact they are still maintaining the balance sheet and reinvesting means that the policy is still very accommodative, said Brad McMillan, chief investment officer at Commonwealth Financial Network.Taking a sanguine posture, McMillan noted that the Fed isn’t “taking away the punch bowl yet, they are just not spiking it as much,” referring to the Fed’s attempt to tighten a nearly decadelong stretch of ultraloose monetary policy.
Initially the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.03% dropped more than 100 points in early trade, but finished only fractionally lower, down 5.41 points at 17,745.98.The S&P 500 SPX, +0.00% ended flat at 2,108.66, with six of its 10 main sectors closing higher. Gains in the utilities and materials sectors were offset by losses in energy and consumer staples stocks. Meanwhile, The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.33% added 17.05 points, or 0.3%, at 5,128.78.Overall, the reading on gross domestic product was better than expected, considering the first-quarter number was raised. The GDP numbers are likely to influence the Federal Reserve’s decision on the timing of the first rate hike, according to analysts. Growth was led by consumer spending on big-ticket items such as new cars as well as home construction, the government said Thursday.“The U.S. economy bounced back in the second quarter as expected and revisions show that it expanded in the first quarter…,” said Joseph Lake, global economist at The Economist Intelligence Unit in emailed notes.
