The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 11,952.97 up 1.06 or 0.01% from Friday's close of 11,951.91. Of the 30 Dow components 17 gained and 13 declined. As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E is 13.60 down from Friday's trailing P/E of 13.79 (year ago it was 14.85); today's P/E estimate is 12.01 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.40 (year ago it was 12.56), and Monday's dividend yield is 2.50 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.46 (last year it was 2.71). Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,579.34 up 0.14 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,579.20. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.64 unchanged from Friday's average closing price of $52.64. If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $14 ($157,920 - $157,934).

MarketWatch Monday 6/13/11 5:07 pm by Kate Gibson says US large-cap stocks posted minor gains Monday, as enthusiasm over a burst of corporate deals overshadowed global economic worries that were amplified by a rating agency’s downgrade of Greece. “There’s life out there in the markets, and maybe if investors won’t buy stocks, companies will,” said Kim Caughey Forrest, senior equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group. “Companies have a lot of cash on their balance sheets, and there are good mergers and acquisitions out there to be had.” After last week’s fall below 12,000, its first since March, the Dow Jones Industrial Average on Monday made a bid to reclaim that level before closing under it. The index of established, large U.S. companies ended up 1.06 points to 11,952.97, with 19 of its 30 components gaining. Pfizer Inc. led gainers, rising 1.7% after The Wall Street Journal reported the pharmaceutical giant plans to go to court this week, in an effort to extend exclusive rights to sell its anti-impotence pill Viagra, which has annual U.S. sales of $1 billion. The S&P 500 Index ended up 0.85 points to 1,271.83, with financials faring the best and energy the worst among its 10 industry groups. Oil futures fell $1.99 at $97.30 a barrel Monday. Oil is still up 31% in the past year. “We’ve hit a soft patch. I think oil prices really did a number on the consumer, and we’re going to see it work its way out of the system for a while,” pointed out Caughey Forrest. The Nasdaq Composite Index , which includes more small-cap stocks than the S&P 500 and Dow industrials, ended down 4.04 points at 2,639.69.
The Russell 2000 , also viewed as a small-cap gauge, lost 2.3 points to 777.2. For every 14 stocks gaining, 17 fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume was 908.3 million. “We got a bit of a pop from a couple of buyouts, but I think the market is very preoccupied with debt, whether it’s the debt limit in the U.S. or sovereign-debt issues in Europe,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners.
Standard & Poor’s Ratings Service on Monday said it lowered its long-term, sovereign-credit ratings on Greece and that the downgrade reflected its view of an increased risk of default. “S&P isn’t saying anything new, but it does cloud the position of the [European Central Bank], which is in favor of no default whatsoever,” wrote Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. A handful of stocks gained on deal announcements. Transatlantic Holdings Inc. rallied 9.5% a day after the reinsurer agreed to join forces with Switzerland’s Allied World Assurance Company Holdings AG. Read round-up of merger announcements. Timberland Co. shares gained 44% after VF Corp. said it would acquire the footwear and apparel company. VF gained 10%. Read more on VF's deal for Timberland. Also, Wendy’s/Arby’s Group Inc. rose 0.9% after Roark Capital Group said it would buy a controlling stake in the fast-food chain. Read more on the Wendy's sale of Arby's. The House and Senate will be in session this week, with Congress facing an August deadline for raising the federal debt limit. “I find it very difficult to believe we could go into default even for a day, but it looks like they are going to battle this all the way to the end,” said Caughey Forrest at Fort Pitt Capital. To Dearborn Partners’ Nolte, “it’s not so much a worry about default or raising the debt ceiling; it’s more of a divide between the politicians and the general public [and a public perception] that politicians seem to be fiddling as Rome is burning.”
